  • We can all participate in choosing the name of the next pope !

Hey, if one can believe that Benedict XVI was divinely inspired to be assimilated into twitdom by tweeting on Twitter, why not open up the naming of the next pope to a vote via the Internet, like the recent one to choose the Monopoly(tm) board-game token most deserving of its retirement, plus the token most popular as its replacement?

According to the list of popes assembled by Wikipedia (recognizing, of course, applicable cautions to all Catholics about their list), numerous Apostles, Doctors of the Church, and other prominent saints, have never been honored by adoption of their name by a pope, e.g.

    Augustin*
    Ambros*
    Barnab*
    Bartholom*
    Bernard*
    David*
    Franc*
    Georg*
    Hieronym* a.k.a. Jerom*
    Jacob* a.k.a. Jam* (2 Apostles)
    Joseph*
Lucus (but there were possibly Evangelist-inspired Popes Lucius I & II)
    Matthe*
    Matthi*
    Philip*
    S(h)imon*
    T(h)ad*
    T(h)om*
    Timoth*

Note #: In the list above, the trailing '*' indicates any & all variations of inflected endings for the name, e.g.: whether "-ans", "-ianus", "-ius", or "-us" in a Latin nominative case.

(Note to readers with itchy thumbs that've become too heavy to keep upright: No, I don't really urge submitting the name to a plebiscite via the Internet, but I was really surprised by the the names I compiled that've never having been chosen by a pope.)

  • How about an eastern saint.  Pope John Chrysostom, Pope Basil, Pope Josaphat.  While we are at it, how about an eastern patriarch as pope.
Stir up within Thy Church, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the Spirit with which blessed Josaphat, Thy Martyr and Bishop, was filled, when he laid down his life for his sheep: so that, through his intercession, we too may be moved and strengthen by the same Spir

I like this. I would also be happy with a Leo XIV or Pius XIII. I should hope those names would signal an about face.

  • Now bishops outside of the College of Cardinals can be elected? I think that this is a Masonic plot.

Elect an antipope. We can get an antipope if we give the right of electing to the bishops.

  • I know that even laymen can be elected as a Pope, thus saving the person from the process of going through a seminary.

Bishops outside of the college have always been eligible.  It fact, any Catholic man is eligible.
