  • Some relatives of mine just move to America, and I need to teach them English -- does anyone have any experience in this? I think that I will teach them using writings of the saints, but I do not know where to start.

  • I was a high school biology teacher in Latin America for fifteen years. To earn extra money, I would often teach night ESL (English as a Second Language) classes to adults.

What level of English do your family members already have?

If it is low, I would recommend starting them with a conversational English program such as that used in citizenship classes here. I used to use a Scott Foresman method that was excellent. In one year, one hour a day, the students would master basic conversational English. Those methods can be supplemented with extra reading material if the students are willing and able. You could call the local schools or government offices where ESL is taught and ask them what method they use. Steer away from any of these DVD or cassette tape methods. They are no substitute for an actual teacher, although some are useful for supplemental material.

If you want practice material with a Catholic theme, try getting some children's/young adults' books from TAN or a Catholic bookstore. Depending on your family members' English level, you could look for books rated for 8 or 9 years old on up. A great book with daily readings written in easy English is Lives of the Saints from the Catholic Book Publishing Company of New Jersey. There are two volumes. Each day has a one or two page mini-biography of that day's saint.

Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions.
