  • Hello. I was wondering if there was a latin mass in the lourdes chapel of the basilica of the immaculate conception in D.C. I keep seeing in Latin mass directories that there is one but when I go on the basilica's website, it doesn't say anything about a Latin mass. So does anyone actually know if they do celebrate a Latin mass? If so, when? do they celebrate them during holy days? Are they going to celebrate one during the mother of God feast?

  • Just call 'em up.  Staff may be on holiday but there might be a Mass schedule accessible by phone.

  • They used to offer a Latin Mass in the Crypt  many years ago--not exactly the TLM--
but a far cry from the Novus Ordo ceremony.

Now, they still call it the Latin Mass at 1:30 on Sunday afternoons, but they mean Latin as in Latin American.

I never heard about it in the Lourdes Chapel at the Basilica, but that does not at all mean it's not happening.  Having spent considerable time there, (living near by), I am guessing it is under the official radar there.  Such a situation is not un-heard of there; it's enormous and lots of priests stay on and around campus.

Old. St. Mary's in Chinatown has a TLM.  I'm assuming you are visiting and traveling by Metro?

Are you able to travel around the DC area?  Hi, Crazy Chicken  :laugh1:

  • Don't go anywhere in the area but to St. Athanasius in Vienna.  Its 20 minutes out of DC , and they do the Traditional Latin Mass .

    Thank me later.

  • I actually live near the D.C. area.  My parish offers a TLM every Sunday but on must holy days they only offer N.O. masses and on the mother of God day they won't be offering a TLM. That's why I was trying to see if there was a TLM somewhere.

Now that I have done some more research, though, I think there are no Latin masses anywhere for mother of God day

Also, about the church in VA that partyisover recommended, keep in mind I am only 16, so it would be impossible to convince my dad to take me that far (I live in Gaithersburg).  Not only that, but family is very irreligious, or what we would call "lukewarm catholic" so there's no way on earth that he would take me to an SSPX church, especially since my radicalism has already freaked him out before, and he will probably think the SSPX is getting that radicalism into my head, even though I am not a sedevancist. Thank you, though, for your idea.

You are a brave young person, Crazy Chickenz. I don't want to make you freak out more but St. Athanasius is actually an independent chapel and is nearly in the process of severing ties with SSPX because of the recent modernism-landscaping Fellay is doing.

I wouldn't call it "radical" to just be Catholic, you know what I mean? I guess maybe to non-Catholics it is radical and countercultural, but not to God and the entire history of the Catholic Church. Sometimes we have to break free from what is holding us back in order to get closer to God. One day when you can drive and you are out of your parents control, I know you will follow truth to where God is calling us Catholics to.

I had a feeling you were young and that transportation was an issue...of course St. Athanasius is the finest...

Why not Old St. Mary's in Chinatown?  Supreme Court Justices,  all sorts of respectable people assist at the Latin Mass there.  7:00 pm.

I am sure everybody will be praying for God's Holy Angels to smooth the way for you to be a good Catholic!

  • Well then, I hope that I am able to go to old Saint Mary's. I highly doubt it because as soon as I mentioned the mother of God feast, my dad got pretty annoyed. But who knows? maybe things will change.

Yes maybe "radical" was the wrong word to use. I just have very counter cultural thoughts because of my faith. My family, especially my dad, has a weird view of religion as a personal preference that makes you a better person, but not a as in being saint, but by simply being a nice person. Which is illogical. If you listen to Micheal Voris this view of religion sounds a lot like "the church of nice". I personally believe that if you aren't willing to go to the extreme for Christianity(suffering discrimination, saying what needs to be said, etc.), which has historical and supernatural evidence proving it to be the only true religion, then you don't really believe in it. It is just a hobby.
