This seems to be a popular subject today. I had read that they were the beginning of the occult movements which wound up being Freemasons, Illuminati... Anty knows much more about that than I do.

All I know is, this is giving an excuse to the enemies of the Faith to "scoff" shall we say -- a la Dan Brown. As an example, you have Kevin Flaherty (Cryptogon) who shames his Irish ancestors by blaspheming the Church every chance he gets.

It makes me sick. Even if the Templars got into some bad stuff (God knows?) it does nothing to the validity of the religion Christ founded.

People love hearing stuff about occult, sorcery, evil, etc. in the Church -- heck, millions of people paid Dan Brown for just such a thriller.

Remember, Christ is still the most hated man on earth. And don't get confused by how many "Christian" churches there are, and how many people say they love Jesus. The Jesus (or Jesus Christ) they profess to love and follow is NOT the same Christ who founded our Church. They follow a sappy marshmallow of a wimp, who expects nothing of his followers, and, in some cases, isn't even divine!

The REAL Christ is masculine, possessing all the virtues in a perfect degree, and has perfect Justice as well as Mercy. He also demands that we follow Him (alone) if we would be saved.

The problem is, it seems to me, that the Church's worst enemies came from inside, just as Judas Iscariot.

I know there will always be enemies using everything they can to destroy the Church. My question is, was Pope Clement correct in chastising the order. How is it that before 1958 there never was a Pope who did anything right and these Modern Popes have all the answers and can upend everything ever written by past Pontiffs. Especially, John Paul II and Benedict XVI. And, by coincedence, everything that these two Pontiffs change or update just happens to give slide room to heretics, schismatics, occultists/masons?
So, that is my question. If they fell into error, and sad to say it seems in all of my reading they did, then Pope Clement V was correct.
And, here is something else to think of. These were the most fearsome fighting men the world has ever seen. I read the sight of 30, swords drawn sent the Infidels running. Sure could use them again, both to chase infidels and usurpers to the Princehood and Papacy of the True Church.
