  • LOS ANGELES (AP) — A man who spent 34 years behind bars for a decades-old killing was freed from jail Friday after his conviction was overturned.

Kash Delano Register, 53, walked out of a downtown jail at about 4:30 p.m. and was greeted by family members and attorneys.

"I'm just in a numb feeling right now," Register told reporters. "You know, it just hasn't really set in yet. I know it's real, but it just hasn't truly set in yet. It's a beautiful feeling, though."

Register was convicted of killing Jack Sasson, 78, in April 1979 and sentenced to 27 years to life in prison. He always maintained his innocence.

Superior Court Judge Katherine Mader threw out the conviction on Thursday, ruling that prosecutors used false testimony at trial and failed to disclose exculpatory evidence. Prosecutors said they would decide by next month whether to appeal the decision or retry him.

Register was convicted mainly on alleged witness testimony. None of the seven fingerprints found on Sasson's car matched Register's, and police never recovered the murder weapon.

Register's girlfriend said he was with her at the time of the shooting but prosecutors relied on the testimony of Brenda Anderson, who identified Register as the gunman.

Two of Anderson's sisters said their sibling lied about seeing Register running away from the crime scene.

  • Mr. and Mrs. Register should be sent to prison -- or at least spanked -- for naming their son "Kash"

"Kash Register"  gahuick! ain' that funny!

Ok, nice 1 minute joke -- but this kid had to live with that name for 53 years and counting.

What kind of last name is "Register" anyhow?  It sounds like a made-up surname to me. It doesn't sound it belongs to any venerable or legitimate culture, nation, or tradition.

  • There is an interesting eye opening book called "In the belly of the beast" by Jack henry abbott. Its about a criminal serving a life sentence who is put into the worst jails in the USA and in solitary confinement and put on psych drugs and tortured with them and by the wardens. He gets out eventually and his lawyer put all his writings into a book. Very interesting and a true story. Makes one see what man can be reduced to by others. I read this as a teenager, and then ended up doing a short time in prison myself, but did not have to suffer what he did. Perhaps books like his helped to change the situation. He was in for murder I believe. Sad thing is there was no trace of religious sentiment in his book. He spent 30+ years inside.

I wonder if Kash R. has any religious sentiment coming out of prison?

From what I hear, a few people who are released from prison have
been found to have acquired some religious sense while in there.

But most do not pick up any religion while incarcerated.

There is a prison ministry tradition, but here in L.A., under Cardfile
Balony --- I mean, Roger Cardinal Mahony, the rules were changed.

Volunteers no longer pray the Rosary with inmates, because that is
not allowed.  They can't give them brown scapulars because gangs
abuse the message (they think so long as they're wearing a
scapular when they commit a crime, they'll go to heaven if they
die during the crime).  Priests who visit prisoners are never allowed
to offer the CTLM but only NovusOrdo at most.  Usually they only
have a "prayer meeting" or really what it turns into is a gripe
session.  Volunteers are encouraged to "listen" to the inmates, and
in practice, there is literally no end to the complaints they have to
talk about.  Inmates generally don't want to hear any words of
faith or trust in God or teachings of Jesus or wisdom of the saints.
They only want to complain about why they're not guilty and they
are mistreated and they don't belong in prison.

And they don't want to hear about Purgatory.  They think they are
in hell already, and 'to hell' with Purgatory.

Did Mr. Register spend 34 years NOT in prayer when he could have
been offering it up to help the Holy Souls in Purgatory?  Chances
are, he'd never heard of that concept.  Or if he had, a Protestant
'minister' would have stepped right up to tell him there is no value
    in "works."
