I will be seeing my spiritual director this weekend and will probably be discussing this with him. What do you think are the signs that I ought to quit the Internet?
I'd tell him how strongly you identify with the forums you post on, how involved you are in the conflicts that occur there, the degree that you think and worry about these conflicts when you are not on the internet, and the degree to which people you meet and interact with online affect you and how seriously you take their opinions.
Based on my observations, I'd think you'd answer those questions:
A lot
Seriously
I suspect more than a little
Apparently quite seriously
If you think I'm right in my estimations, then you might say
"Father, I identify very strongly with the forums I post on, to the point of defending them, apologizing for them, and evangelizing for them, even though I do not own them and have no say in how they are run. Incidentally, they are run by lay people.
I get very involved in the conflicts that occur on these forums, and I respond in emotional ways because as I said, I am very personally invested in these forums.
I find that I think and worry about the online conflicts when I am not on the internet at all.
Also, recently, I received some bad advice from a person I interact with on the internet, and I found that I was taking this advice very seriously even though now, I question the wisdom of it."
Any spiritual adviser worth his salt should say, at that point "Jayne, perhaps the internet and these conflicts are becoming a temptation for you."
You can decide if my inferences from my observations are true. If not, then by all means, join in the fray. In any case, you are wise, wise, wise to take it to your director. Best of luck and God Bless.
