Jackie O's antiquated views 'horrified' grandkids

NEW YORK — Caroline Kennedy says her daughters were "horrified" listening to taped interviews of grandmother Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis' old-fashioned views on the role of women.

In the 1964 interviews with Arthur Schlesinger Jr., the young widow described her marriage as "a rather terribly Victorian or Asiatic relationship" and said she got all her opinions from her husband, President John F. Kennedy.

Caroline Kennedy said Wednesday on ABC's "Good Morning America" that her two daughters were "absolutely horrified" when they listened to that portion of the tapes.

She said they asked: "Did she really think that?"

But Kennedy says the tapes are "just a snapshot of a world we barely recognize."

The audio recordings are being released Wednesday along with a book, "Jacqueline Kennedy: Historic Conversations on Life With John F. Kennedy."

  • I loved Mrs. Kennedy's elegance and grace.

She had really excellent mantillas also.

Those grandchildren sound ungrateful to me!

  • have any of you ever wondered if jackie o reacted properly to her husbands assasination? from the zapruder tapes after kennedy gets shot she tries to help him, but then he gets shot a second time she tries to jump out of the car.

this may be innapropriate, because who knows how they would react in a situation like that, but shouldnt she have covered him to protect him from getting shot? for all she knew there would be more guns shots headed his way, and she could have risked her life for him by covering him with her body.

anyway, that has always struck me. wouldnt an ideal marriage be one where the spouses would sacrifice their lives for one another?

  • No, I don't think she acted badly at all, nor should she as a mother of small children gotten herself killed.

but wouldnt it be ideal if her instinct was to cover his body?

No he should cover hers, why would a man be protected by a woman?

You know who was ideal, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, even shot and dying his only care was that his wife should live for their children, unfortunately they both died at the hands of that scuм the Black Hand Terrorist group from Serbia.

im talking about a specific scenario where he is incapacitated. not passing judgment at all but curious if the ideal when you see a spouse in harm is to flee.

  • In her defense, the shot came out of the blue and she had no way of predicting there would be another one. She instinctively thought that she needed to retreive the piece of her husband's head on the trunk of the car as he might need that to have a chance of survival. It was a horrible tragedy.

No! Part of the president's skull had been blown off and was on the trunk. She went to retreive it. And that was the second shot. The first shot hit him in the throat and before anyone realized what happened the second shot was fired, hitting him in the head, and that is when she went on the trunk of the car to retreive it!
