Wow, that's a beautiful specimen.  Wish I knew the location, but it looks like an Eastern Fence Lizard (Sceloporus undulatus) to me.  I could be wrong.  I've never seen lizards except in Florida, where green anoles, brown anoles, and house geckos abounded.  They are very charming little creatures!  Here in MI we only have five-lined skinks and six-lined racerunners, but at least we have a wide variety of turtle and snake species to make up for it.

Were the scales keeled?  Where was the picture taken?

lol.  It was taken yesterday around noon in front of my next door neighbor's house.

This is the first year these lizards have appeared in our neighbhorhood, here in Cincinnati.

It's a mediterranean wall lizard, they were released by a rich kid in the 1950s west of here.

they've gradually spread about five or six miles east and this summer we see them running around.

what do you mean by "scales keeled"?

My brother is in Phoenix now.  He said he can handle the heat and hasn't gotten burned yet.  I hope so.

I'm not envious.  Right now it's 66 and the predicted high tomorrow is 78.

  • That's a fine looking little lizard!

I'm always checking out the tops of rocks for turtles sunbathing when I go out for a walk by the ponds.
    Sincerely,

  • Tele - your brother is fortunate indeed to be able to tolerate heat.  Most of us run from an air conditioned house to air conditioned car to anyplace else that has AC.  It's this time of year we all dream of moving to Maine  :jumping2:

So it's an invasive species.  I didn't even think of that.  By the way, these can be purchased for $60 from reptile suppliers...or I suppose the fleet of foot could have a go in Cincinnati?  I saw a picture of a blue morph of this species once- absolutely stunning!

Keeled scales have a ridge down the center instead of being smooth.  Often the keels are stronger in male specimens, but not for all species.  Typically, keeled species lack luster and likely it enhances camouflage patterns.

I like a lot of things about Texas and the SW, but I could never deal with that heat. Was stationed in the desert when I was in the USMC and it damned near killed me and I was just a kid then, now forget it. I won't ever go below New Jersey in the summer and even entertain the idea of moving further north because I can't even handle the summers here in upstate NY, although lately it feels more like SE Asia around here these days........hazy, hot and humid every freakin day with the dew points skyrocketing constantly.

And rain, rain, rain, rain everywhere, everyday with no end in sight.

I really believe sometimes the Earth is reacting to a totally corrupt culture and God uses weather as a form of naturally selected extinction of a people that need to be eradicated from the planet for all it's deviancy and corruption.

Look for more bad weather in the future with every SCOTUS decision handed down enabling every form of Sodomy and Infanticide.
