  • Apparently there are some who mistakenly believe that Pius X smoked tobacco. Aside from the phoney NYT article that has been posted here in the past, could some evidence of this be provided?   :smoke-pot:

Unless i am mistaken the accusation comes from the fantasies of T Herzel.

  • It's not a mortal sin. It's not even sinful. Is it really serious matter? According to that logic, every time I jump out of a plane (parachuting) I am endangering my life, that is also a mortal sin. God gave us freedom. Let's not turn religion into a moral theology class.

Some opposed his beatification/canonization precisely because it was well known that he smoked cigars. The sane men in Rome shot down said opposition as so much nonsense.  Go browse the Acta Apostolicae Sedis, roscoe.

Your stupidity does not grow more endearing just because it endures.

You DOUBT?  LOL!  I am absolutely CERTAIN that smoking, in and of itself, is not sinful in any way, shape or form.

I stand corrected.  I gave you a thumbs up for your fraternal correction.

Good for you and thank you.  I returned the favor.  Apparently some irrational, fact-deprived ass-wipes still saw fit to thumb me down for what can only be surmised are absolutely emotional motives!  LOL!  Anyway, carry on and know that smoking, IN SE, is not a sin of any variety, which is not to say that some smokers are not sinning by continuing to smoke when other factors alter the moral landscape.

A blessed and peaceful weekend to all...even my most committed enemies  :dancing:

  • The myriad of problems tobacco causes were pretty much unknown until recent years.

If im not mistaken it has only been in the 60's or 70's that all the things they cause were starting to be discovered.

There are different types of cigarettes/ways to smoke so that also depends. I hear the "pure" tobacco leaf isn't bad and that it even makes your teeth white and helps with calcium. Supposedly.

The modern filtered cigarettes are loaded with carcinogens and harmful chemicals. They didn't even exist during St. Pius X's time.

It is an undisputed fact that cigarettes can give you a number of cancers. Smoking is a coin toss; you either get cancer or you don't. Some are heavy smokers and never get anything during their whole life, some do. You don't know. But i don't believe taking that risk would be far from sinful at all.

Not to mention that they are addictive because of the nicotine. You can't live without them after a certain time and that would certainly be sinful imo.

Like others said they are a massive waste of money (if you buy them in countries where they are expensive like the U.S.) and time.

There is also the fact that second-hand smoking also causes cancer. Not only could you take yourself down but you could also take others down with you.

I firmly believe had all the medical and health implications of smoking had always been known, the Church would have decreed it is sinful to smoke. And smoking in moderation does not even compare to drinking in moderation. You can still get cancer smoking "moderately".

Smoking a pack a day would certainly be mortally sinful, imo. Think about how much time that would take to do, and how addicted the person has to be to smoke that much to begin with.

    Smoking is vicious. Period.

  • I can say this which is true:  The Tobacco tax is one support for the school based and linked clinics(the healthcare reform) that pays for contraception, abortion and such.  Most people are not aware that the tobacco tax does this.  You would be surprised(?) of every organization that pays into the healthcare reform.  There is no such thing as a voice for or against the reform.

One thing not mentioned in this excellent post is that tobacco use produces a sensation similar to Crank(Meth). It makes one very uptight & wired.

Well since God made it I can't imagine why there should be a problem providing it is used responsibly.

There is no way to use tobacco responsibly.  God made toadstools too, but that doesn't make them safe to consume.

But I doubt that smoking is, in and of itself, objectively mortally sinful.

You DOUBT?  LOL!  I am absolutely CERTAIN that smoking, in and of itself, is not sinful in any way, shape or form.

What next?  Is someone going to ask whether or not eating at McDonald's, while arguably unwise, is mortally sinful?  Will we see a list of all McDonald's items with some kind of sin-rank next to each one?

    McDonaldland Cookies...low-grade venial sin...
    Six-piece McNuggets...mid-level venial sin...
    Quarter Pounder Meal...high-level venial sin...
    Any Super-sized meal...low-grade mortal...
Multiple Big Macs...just kill yourself now and burn forever you stultified glutton!

People, smoking -- IN SE -- is NO SIN AT ALL.

It may not be sinful.  It is, however, really stupid.
