  • A girl i know is about to dye her hair and i wonder if it is sinful and very vain and something a traditional catholic girl should/should not do.

She is 21 and her hair is dark brownish and she wants to dye it into a kind of orange color, but not a neon orange or too bright or anything like that, it's supposed to be a "natural" color.

I personally think she probably shouldn't do it but since i'm not sure i can't tell her definitively that she will sin if she does it.

  • Why does she want to dye her hair?  Is it to enhance her natural appearance or does her brown hair look somehow odd that she would be stared at?  Or is it to show off?  Impress some man?  Is she just curious?  IF she does it, try a non-permanent dye that washes out.  Oranges, reds, blondes tend to all look brassy and fake.  She may find herself wearing scarves and hats for several months if a permanent dye turns out badly.  Why not condition, shine and style the hair God gave her?  Dyes contain ammonia and peroxide and are very hard on the hair and scalp.  I doubt it's a mortal sin unless deceit or lust is the motive, but I can think of better uses for time and money.  She'll look better if she uses the time it would take to pray an extra Rosary.
St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.

Well she says its not for any of those reasons, she says she wants it "just for herself", just to "change" for a while. She says she has always wanted to dye it that way because she likes the color etc.

It is permanent but supposedly this one is good for the hair because this one is natural and has vitamins and proteins and stuff like that.

Actually, her hair did get a little damaged and it's not like it used to be before, and supposedly this dye would be good for the hair and would get it closer to what it used to look.

  • The acti of dyeing hair itself seems morally neutral.

The 'why' she is dyeing it seems important.

  • How about if you dye your hair to cover grey?

My wife does it. She says it's not for me, but, for herself. Whatever that means.  Women confuse me.

A lot of women color their hair to cover grey, as it can age them by ten years.  Some women start to grey as early as 25. When the grey isn't too much, they use a wash out. But once it's over 50% they tend to go with a permanent coloring. Eventually, they just let it go a la natural.  It's just another part of trying to look ones best.  As for young women doing it, I think it's kind of silly.  But then young women look at hair as an extension of their wardrobe.

  • Brown is ugly but orange is better?

Don't worry about the hair dye-- worry about her powers of reasoning.

  • Eh, it's harmless fun. I just did mine from blonde to brunette (more like light brown) just ...because. I'd worn my hair long, straight, and blonde forever, and people kept nagging me that I needed a change. I didn't care for a long time, but then I figured I'd surprise everyone heh. I didn't want a cut or a perm, so I did the brown color.

(Then I read that it's common for women to color their hair after their mothers' pass, and my mother passed earlier this year, so I'm probably just a statistic.)

I'm enjoying the change, but warn her that lighter roots come back in, and she might look like a skunk LOL. (Easily fixed: they just paint lowlights into the roots to "blend" the new growth into your colored hair.)

If I started to go gray, I think I'd cover it somehow, just because I personally dislike the blonde/white-gray combo. I haven't thought that far yet, but most older women I know seem to choose to cover their gray, or go all gray. Get this: at their husbands' requests. Men care more about it than you think. Our employees are mostly male, and I hear them complaining about their wives' "frumpy dresses", or hair, "ugly glasses", etc. My husband definitely has input into my "style".

So I know men care more than they admit.  :detective:

  • I just asked my husband and he said frizzy hair is worse than gray hair on a woman.  I guess everyone has their own likes and dislikes.

  • I would recommend a nice hair treatment before dye or bleach. Often hair feels silkier after dye, but there are other ways to go about it that actually help your hair. In the end, they really do fry it more and cause damage.

If she wants a salon experience, a deep conditioning treatment would provide all of the fun with none of the orange. She is likely to appreciate her natural hair more than ever.

There are good products on the market for home treatments, as well. The place scares me a little, but if there is an Ulta in your area, it'd be a great place to look.

  • Rather like makeup, it's a kind of falsification.

And why is it used? A large number of folks who dye their hair do it to not look their age.

Folks who are older, have grey hairs, are due more respect than folks who are younger. The older the more deference and care the younger are required to take in conversation and generally with.

I.e. turn the mockery secular society makes of the aged, with their disabilities, and instead think of the Christian grandfather or grandmother, and the authority and respect due in the family.

But if you cover that up, and youth is what is respected most, why is the youth valued? Not for good reasons I am thinking.

'The joy of young men is their strength: and the dignity of old men, their grey hairs.'

    Proverbs 20:29

    Sincerely,
