I think society today needs to tamp down on the constant hyperbole. The hurricanes are powerful storms, and they have destroyed property, inconvenienced many people, and killed a few hundred. When put in historical perspective, however, things are pretty darn rosy right now.
For example, Spanish Flu killed 100 million people in 1918.
The San Francisco earthquake of 1906 killed 3,000 in a few minutes and leveled 80% of the city.
The Black Death killed 200 million (a fifth of the global population) in the 14th Century.
Mount Vesuvius took out the entire city of Pompeii in the year 79.
When we don't think about this historical perspective, we can easily think that every natural disaster is God's wrath. When put into perspective, we're doing OK.
