  • Hi, I just turned 36. I live just outside of Detroit. I am a recovering lapsed Catholic.

I'm very interested in learning more about living an authentic Catholic life. I have a few parishes in my area offering the Latin mass. I like attending these but I need to learn more about what's being said and done.

I work 3rd shift in a gas station. Right now it's all my body can handle. My sinful life after I left the Church has had dire consequences on my body, soul, and mind. I also hurt many people while I was out there. I hate to admit it, but almost all the people I hurt were those who loved me and wanted nothing but the best for me. Please pray for me that I can have the grace to avoid going back to that life.

On a happier note, I've found my mind is significantly more calm this past week. I am eager to find out what it's like to remain in a state of grace and regularly receive the Eucharist. At this point, I don't care if I get married or have kids or make a lot of money. I'm lucky to be alive, I'll be even luckier if I can ever have a living space that I can call my own.
    I live by Detroit too

  • Hello everyone,

Matthew - thank you for letting me join this forum.

Was aware of cathinfo by name only for years, but only started exploring discussions in forums a few days ago...excellent commentary, engaging. Also - ham radio discussions interesting, as I am one myself. Licensed in 2017. Been a radio nut since I was a kid, shortwave, scanners, CB.

Catholic Canadian here, just moved to the middle of nowhere on fairly big property, making an attempt to homestead to whatever degree I can, off grid, etc. Still construction work to do, build garage, sheds, and so on. Access to Latin Mass, but about 1+ hours to get there.

    Rosary intentions for all here.
Hey Canuck, here's to a good groundhog report in your neck of the woods, and God's blessings on your adventures. Aren't we all "in the middle of nowhere" up here? LOL. People that have never been to Canada (nor driven in it), have no clue how big this country really is). ;-)

Thanks for the Rosary, back 'atcha.

    God bless, Anne
(A Canuck also, and current fellow inmate of Canuckistan under Trudeau. Can I get you a Timmy's? Poutine? Red Truck (the beer, although if you have a red truck, that's cool--no Ford though, lol).

P.S. I am eyeing your land, you lucky duck. So by process of elimination of Mass and your description, I can pretty much tell which provinces you might live in, lol. I reminded my husband again today I am still going to find a way to get goats, and he just laughed and said we could keep them on the patio for the time being. LOL. Enjoy, and don't forget to get it all blessed, and put palms and/or medals in the corners of your property. We always do, and it has proven miraculous in the last year--weather-wise. Good luck.

At this point, I don't care if I get married or have kids or make a lot of money. I'm lucky to be alive, I'll be even luckier if I can ever have a living space that I can call my own.
Hi yourself :-) The difference between a sinner and a saint: A sinner will fall 6 times and get up until the 7th fall. The saint will fall 6 times and get up until the 7th fall. On the 7th fall, he will get up and remain up, unlike the sinner who will stay down. (Or it goes something like that) ;-)

Be patient with yourself, and be kind to yourself. Baby steps. Honest work is admirable no matter what it is. There is no shame in that. God will reward you for that in itself. Maybe one day you will be running that gas station, who knows? You can have fun dreaming new dreams, and thinking of heaven as your new travel itinerary :-)

God can help you "fix" the broken relationships, if it is His will. But first, He is helping you! Congratulations on deciding to turn your life around and to improve your situation.

You still have HOPE, because you are still ALIVE. Remember those 2 things, and take each day as it comes. NEVER LET ANYONE STEAL YOUR HOPE. If you don't have hope, you will fall into despair. Hope! God is good!

If you have not heard of the brown scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, please read about it, and consider asking a Priest to enroll you in it. It will give you a beautiful gift of protection from Our Blessed Mother, and it will be a constant reminder that you are clothed in her armour. We are in a spiritual war--the scapular is an AMAZING weapon to help the body and mind and soul afloat.

I also recommend the Miraculous Medal to wear. There is also a little enrollment prayer with it. It is called Miraculous for a reason ;-)

The Rosary--the last part of my "trifecta" (horse lover and racing fan here)--anyway, those three things will go a long way to help keep you in the state of grace, if you are sincerely trying to stay there. I have my own story about my husband and the Rosary. It helped us through some terrible tragedy in our lives. It works! When we aren't praying it at home, we are praying it when we are driving. If you drive or take a bus or what-ever, consider getting a podcast or Youtube video of someone praying the Rosary--it may help you pray more if it feels like you have "company" to pray with. Also, learn the prayer to Your Guardian Angel, and say it each day and night. Your Guardian Angel will love to help you stay in God's friendship.

I was just listening to a mini-podcast on the way home from Mass today--the Priest was reminding of the power of the devil. His number one tool is TEMPTATION. If you can avoid temptation, then you have eliminated almost all of his power! The devil CANNOT possess someone UNLESS they FREELY give permission to do so. BUT, the devil can cause people to OBSESS about certain thoughts/people/things--that is his next favourite tool to use after temptation.

By keeping your mind on Godly things and prayer, and away from the dark-side or things that caused you sin and hardship in the past, you are on the right path. It takes on average, 30 days to build a new habit. The good habits need to replace the bad, that's the key.

If you were nearby, I would give you a big hug and shake your hand. People like YOU are the reason I put up with so much in one of my former professions caring for others and volunteering for decades. You actually want to do the work to change--you are the exception, and not the rule. That takes bravery and courage. Most people could not be as honest as you have been here, so I wish you well and will pray for you.

I will also pray that you find a way to care for yourself--exercise--it is good for sleep, pain relief, keeping your mind off things, it's a natural anti-depressant, and it is good for healing. Even walking, 30 minutes each day. You could go for a walk around a lake or in the park, pray your Rosary, or just enjoy nature, and talk to God and use it as a time to clear your head! The more you exercise, the easier it gets, too, just like prayer. If you combine the two, then you will soon find that you notice something is missing--either you will miss your Rosary, or you will miss going for a walk. That's the idea. Drink water. Eliminate one bad habit at a time.

Once your body gets stronger, it will go a long way to helping strengthen your mind and your resolve, and your mental wellbeing will also improve. Spiritual, mental, physical, emotional---look after those 4 things, and you will figure out a lot of things you never knew you could before in your old life ;-) The devil will ALWAYS go for the weakest link in that chain--if you are overtired, you won't pray. If you are mentally struggling, you will give in to temptations, and so on. Emotionally, you will be helped by building your spiritual life and finding a good friend that is NOT from your old life if they were helping you to sin. You might want to reconnect with your loved ones though and ask them simply to pray for you, but only you will know when or if you can handle that. PLEASE DON'T consider marriage until you are stable and whole and have been consistently so for a few years. I know it may sound harsh, but marriage is hard enough without adding on additional stresses. If you cannot care for yourself, you are not going to be able to care for a wife and children. Your spouse should be able to expect the best of you. You don't want a marriage to end badly because you rushed it, or you couldn't remain chaste on your own. Self-control is really important in a marriage, and in life. Poor self-control makes poor marriages. Your wife will be resentful and exhausted if she is afraid she won't be able to say "no," to you, even if gently because she is tired, or just had a baby and needs a break for an extended time.

A marriage is for selflessness, NOT selfishness. It requires huge sacrifices.

Saint Anthony of Padua has NEVER failed me--he finds me everything and anything, and may he do the same for you in finding you a wonderful place to live! I will pray to him for you, for that intention.

    God bless you, Anne

P.S. Always remember that every Saint had a past--the only one that started at the top was the Blessed Virgin Mary :-) So when you are discouraged or frustrated, you can always search online for Saints for whatever is bothering you at the time, and in turn, you can have even more friends :-) PEACE! All the best in your journey. You have MUCH to teach others, but do not get upset if you find resistance, quick judgments and a whole lot of negativity and people that aren't interested in learning. I'd go have a coffee with you and buy you a meal, no problem, but there are some people on this forum that would not. (I have run into them). They could not handle the rawness. Just a head's up.

Take whatever I have said and weigh it according to what you know is your truth and your story, and go from there. I am not really here for the religion stuff anymore--too many narrow minded, and stuffy "debaters" for me--they get upset if you color outside the lines---I prefer the raw, and real, and real life, and that's why I wrote to you. There may be something that you or someone else that reads this can be helped by. :-) There are a lot of people hurting in the world today, and you may just turn out to be the spark to help someone else turn their life around. So maybe you might end up as a peer-support worker or something down the road? Hang in there!

I have a question, in your link you wrote: "Edith Stein, I am baptized by you in the name of Father and Son and the Holy Spirit. I was born again."

Were the above words the actual words used at your baptism?

May I ask....what is it that you are referring to in regards to Edith Stein and baptism? Since it's a typo, perhaps you can correct it and explain what you meant to say?

I have a conversion story similar to yours, but I remember all of the details quite well.
"It is licit to resist a Sovereign Pontiff who is trying to destroy the Church. I say it is licit to resist him in not following his orders and in preventing the execution of his will. It is not licit to Judge him, to punish him, or to depose him, for these are acts proper to a superior."

I guess it was the auto-correction in words or something that changed the whole sentence.

  • Hi,

I am 22-year-old female living with my husband who is homesteading. I moved from the city (where I lived all my life) to be with him. We have free-range chickens currently. I'm planning on doing RCIA this Fall to become Catholic. I was not raised Christian so it's been a journey for the past 3 years.

I live in Canada where it's not so free so that's why my husband and I left the city. We can grow our own food and not as dependent on the government. We plan on homeschooling and having a big family.

I was part of a non-denominational church group at my university in 2019 but it caused me to doubt Christianity because of how shallow and fake the meet-ups were. I wanted to seek the truth and find meaning in my life since I was basically an atheist all my life. My brother (who's currently doing RCIA) told me about contraception not being allowed by the Catholic church last year, and it made me interested in the faith since.

My husband and I currently attend the Norvus Ordo mass (45 min drive) which is somewhat relevant compared to the other ones I heard about, and I hope it stays that way. I would like to attend a TLM but unfortunately, they're in the city which is 3-4 hours away. I have been interested in traditionalism for the past few years.

Here's a picture of our rooster, my friend...

Without valid sacraments it will be hard for you.

Hello.  It's nice to have you here.  What city is there at about 45 minutes from you?  Certainly an Eastern Rite Catholic church would be much preferable to the Novus Ordo.  Perhaps there are some there.  I could have a look around.  Ukrainian Catholic churches are especially plentiful in Canada.
