      Story 1

A few years ago during a visit to the US some friends and I were going to Mass in the SSPX chapel in Phoenix, Arizona. We had been told by others who had attended Mass in American chapels that the men folk dressed like Mormon missionaries with suits and ties. We dressed as we would have back home, ie. casual, and were pleasantly surprised to see many in shirtsleeve shirts and open necks. One day we were to be picked up from the grounds of the chapel by one of the members who was taking us sight seeing. She drove in to collect us but wouldn’t get out of the car. When we asked why she said “I’m wearing pants” Well, in our innocent European way we said “well we should hope so.” Then we realised she meant trousers. She said that there would be a scandal if anyone knew and later told us that she knew of cases in different chapels where women had been reported to the priests by other members who had seen them in town wearing trousers. When we said that surely the priests would tell the tale carriers where to go she said that in some cases yes, but in other cases the priest had given the trouser wearers a telling off saying they must not wear them EVER, and in one case a priest had publicly humiliated the “offender” from the pulpit. A priest carrying on like that is overstepping his authority and should be told so but an American friend says that people there will not stand up to priests unlike Scotland where one or two American priests have been put in their place by members of the faithful.

    story 2

Did we not see a few months ago the SSPX Asia district newsletter wherein a few young ladies from the USA were helping with the missions and were dressed in the traditional "indian garb" for women? i.e. Long tunic and .... (wait for it)....PANTS!! (that would be trousers for the English!   )

I will tell a story that . About 2 years ago I went to one of the "local" SSPX chapels as I knew the priest and liked him immensely. He was going to be transferred to another circuit so I knew I would not see him again. I got off of work and drove (some distance) to the chapel in pants (really hip, utility-type green pants). When I walked in I got plenty of stares and a few scoffs from some of the women. I walked right up to the priest, who by this time had a HUGE grin on his face. He had never seen me in pants before. I said with a big smile, "Hey Father! How are ya? Sorry about the pants" He said, still grinning from ear to ear, "No you're not." I said smiling back holding back a laugh, "No...I'm really not!" He shook his head and laughed ever so slightly. Now, I don't think this priest "approved" of my wearing pants, I think he just got a kick out of my nerve! Daring to show up in pants. He is the type of priest who pushes the envelope you could say and has a "rebellious streak" himself. In any case, I can testify that I received far more glares and huffs from the women at the chapel than from the men.
