There are only a few more days (exact number is unknown) before another big "terrorist" attack, which will certainly begin the Stock Market's retreat. Right now, the Dow is hovering around the record high set in 2000.

The Housing Bubble is eventually going to decimate the economy, but a terror attack will likely speed up the process immensely.

If I had any money in a 401K or similar account (which invests in the stock market), I would PULL MY MONEY OUT IMMEDIATELY.

There is going to be a major bloodbath on Wall Street, and very soon. I have done a lot of research to arrive at this conclusion.

I just don't want to see many Catholics losing their life savings, just like everyone else will.

ChantCD (and all others),

There's been a lot of talk going around about some catastrophic event happening in the near future. Besides pulling money from the market, what are some immediate preparations that can be done?

For one example, where should one's money go? Surely, piles of paper money won't be of much use in a crashed economy...

I have absolutely nothing. My 90 year old grandmother has a little invested through the trust department at the local bank. How can we ever get people to listen to us? About 8 years ago we had inherited about $65,000.00 all in Lucent Funds. I pleaded with my husband. Nothing. Well, Lucent and all of the money is history. Gone. And the really dumb thing is when I started to be proven correct he would not yank the money out because his advisor, (his late brother) told him that it would all work out in the end.

Well, I wouldn't assume that DEBT will be cancelled at the same time our savings/checking/money market accounts are frozen "for national security reasons".

So you might want to pay down your debt if nothing else -- at least it allows the banks to lend out less money to others :)
Every 1,000 in the bank is 10,000 that can be lent out at interest (thanks to our Fractional Reserve banking system)

Who knows if they're planning on rounding up people into Debt Prisons as a way to neutralize certain annoying people in the population.

What should you use your withdrawn money for?

Well, things you can eat/use/keep warm with.

Gardening supplies, organic seeds (that produce fruit with viable seeds), shovels, wheelbarrows, axes, wood, canned goods, dried meat/fruit, $5 jars of nuts, medicine, vitamins, bottled water, solar oven ($200), camping equipment (propane heater, stove, etc.) water purifying equipment, military surplus survival equipment, sewing machine, cloth, extra clothing, rope, large garbage cans (for growing potatoes, storing water, etc), and many other things you can probably think of.

As Catholics, I would recommend against heavy firearm acquisition -- except maybe something to kill wild animals with (for food). We're not pagan survivalists. If they come to my door to take my family to a FEMA camp, we're going to go peacefully. Hopefully we can convert many people there.

Most of these things would be great to own anyhow -- and you're not going to regret having any of these things. The list is a mile long, really.

In the meantime, spend any "normally wasted" time on developing a down-to-earth skill. if you have no downtime (or extra money), then God will take care of you. But those of us who DO have extra time and/or money, had better spend it wisely -- Because THAT might be the main way God is going to provide for us :)

Namely, giving us a heads-up so we can prepare a bit.

Besides, if something happens, and EVERYONE is losing money, you all will be experiencing an angst that most people will NOT be experiencing. Because THEY didn't read CathInfo.com, and THEY didn't see it coming, unlike you :)

You recommend buying gardening supplies, seeds, etc. I remember reading about the collapse of the Soviet Union and how even a number of urban peoples were able to survive because Russians (and others in the region) had a habit of growing some of their own foods.

For a while, I've been curious about this topic (growing of food) in my area. I don't have a heck of a lot of land (just a small flower bed or two), and the growing season is just about over anyway.

With this in mind, I remembered something called "sprouting," which supposedly is easy and will provide one with a lot of nutrients. The issue is that this seems to be a temporary solution. I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't know if I could survive on sprouts alone. Haha.

So, I guess the next question is: What do you recommend (peak oil or not, terrorism or not, etc.etc.) for an urban/suburban environment in the Midwest? Is it possible to grow a few small snacks, herbs, etc. in the kitchen or near a big window? Of course, I'm not planning on sustaining myself on these items, but it'd be nice to grow a bit of my own food. For a short while, I attempted some potted herbs in my kitchen (basil, etc.), but I messed up somehow, and they died. >.< I suspect that it was a sunlight issue. Other family members here have a habit of shutting the blinds continually...

Anyway, some advice (from anyone)?

The question you ask has been tackled by entire books and entire websites :)

There are many plants (including citrus!) that can grow in potted containers year-round, even in northern climates.

There are many plants (check out www.parkseed.com) that can grow in pots, hanging baskets, etc. and are suitable for even city and apartment cultivation!

My backyard is measured in square feet, NOT acres, as well -- but I'm not about to give up :) I figure a little food is better than NO food. Besides, I'm learning how to grow food, which will make me more useful later on (I want to have skills BESIDES 'computer programmer' -- which might be much less useful in 2, 5 or 10 years)

Being "more useful" might help me & my family to survive, but it will also help me to help others, which is even more important.

I have dug up about 650 sq. feet of my backyard, which even more to come -- I won't have much grass in my backyard for long. I have a front yard, and I can always mow the grass alley behind my house, if I miss mowing the lawn :)

Actually, I already mow the alley all the time -- I have a bagging mower, and I harvest the grass for my (huge) compost pile. It's free organic matter that no one wants, that I can turn into my own potatoes and tomatoes! What a deal! :)

I pretty much don't throw away anything organic. Sticks, leaves, etc. go into either the compost pile, or one of 4 garbage cans that serve as compost bins.

Yes, I knew this was a big topic, but I'm never sure where to start with such research. Your one link there seems to sell me stuff, but are there any good resources on how to actually go about starting an (indoor) garden? Particularly with the winter coming, I wouldn't complain about having some fresh herbs, etc. to eat from an indoor pot or whatnot.

You mentioned citrus, and that definitely interests me. I would, of course, prefer the option to grow some mangos, pineapples, etc. indoors, but that might be pushing it, right? Haha.

Not to be a bother, but what do you make of my mention of "sprouts/sprouting" in my previous post?

I'm thinking we should resist them with massive prayer protests. Gather in large numbers in front of government buildings, and pray.

I ain't gonna gun anyone down, but if martial law is imposed to keep us "safe", and the government decides they have to do something about us "pesky Christians", and Catholics start gettin butchered by government goons...

I wouldn't know what to do, I just wouldn't.

We'll just have to pray it never comes to that, unless the Lord wills it.
