  • Are we to fast and abstain on this day?

The Angelus calendar says no, but I've heard we are supposed to.

    Thanks.

  • We do.  Same as Christmas Eve.  My Mom always served oyster stew.

  • I have "The Catholic's Guide," printed in 1946.  It says fast and abstinence for the vigils of Pentecost, Assumption, All Saints, and Christmas, unless vigil falls on a Sunday.  I've seen elsewhere that in the 1950s Dec 23 came to suffice instead of Dec 24.  No mention of Immaculate Conception.

Also, I understand this source to say fast and abstinence on Ember Days (which are approaching), with no mention of ending at noon on Saturday.

  • What does your Sovereign Pontiff tell you to do?  The disciplines he approves CANNOT be evil/wrong.

He does not forbid us to fast and abstain if we so desire, on the vigil of the Immaculate Conception, though he doesn't require it.

However, since I'd like to follow the Pre VCII practice in this matter, I'm wondering what it is....

  • How come the Angelus calendar and the previous poster's Missal from the 40's make no mention of it?

I think that is because Pius XII changed the day of fast and abstinence from the Vigil of the Assumption to the Vigil of the Immculate. I repeat, I think; I`m not sure. I read somthing like this somewhere...

  • Because my Mom liked to punish us with oyster stew.  I was on to her, pre V2, even.

If you use the earlier calendar, certain vigils are are days of fast and abstinence.  If you use the calendar that was in effect at the end of Piux XII's reign, these vigils are not days of fast and abstinence.  John XXIII did not change this.

The Society uses (I understand) the calendar and Missal of 1962, therefore, SSPX devotees do not have to observe these days of fast and abstinence.

What should traditional Catholics do?  I simply do not know for sure.
