So don't forget to turn your clocks back or else you'll be the only one who's an hour early.
    .
Some clocks are too complicated to turn back, so it's better to just stop them for an hour.
    .
For battery powered watches or clocks, just remove the battery.
    .
For good old pendulum clocks, stop the pendulum from swinging. Really simple.
    .
But then don't forget to start them again an hour later. Put the battery back in, or swing the pendulum.
    .
If you have one with a date function, they usually reset between 12:00 am and 3:00 am.
    .
Some with a day-of-the-week window reset the day as late as 5:00 am.
    .
In that case, if you wait too long and try to start them again after say 2 hours, advancing one hour might make a problem.
    .
You should wait until after 6:00 am to advance the time so as not to damage the date mechanism.
    .
I have a RAYMOND WEIL (quasi-luxury) watch which ALWAYS advances the date exactly at 12:00 am.
And it doesn't have any second hand -- so how does it know when it's exactly 12:00? Hmmm...
    .
I have a Radio Controlled automatic watch, which did not change daylight savings time by itself for the first year.
    .
I had to read the instruction manual to find out how to select the only setting that turns on the DSA feature.
    .
Now I don't remember what that was, but the watch resets the time by itself since the setting hasn't been changed.
    .
But it has to be within range of a transmitter, like in Japan they have 3 but in the USA there's only one. Go figure.
    .
Japan has one in the north, one near Tokyo and one in the south. Why does Japan have 3? Well, Citizen is Japanese.
    .
If you're in Hawaii or Alaska, Guam or Vladivostok, you'd pick up the Japanese signal, which could be any of the three.
    .
If you're in Canada, Maine, California, Bahamas or Central America, you'd pick up the one signal from Colorado.
    .
It must be a very strong signal.
    .
If you're in Tierra del Fuego or Madagascar or Antarctica, you're probably out of range, since Germany is too far away.

  • Used to have Casio waveceptor watches. Now just other Casio watches.

Now if only we did not have to move the clocks ahead in the spring again. I sense that day is coming though for those whowould like this.

Feels like the third month of practically-winter way up here at 53N. I like winter but it wreaks havoc now on this old sickly bear.

I forgot to mention, it's not a good idea to push the minute hand counter-clockwise to turn your clock back because that can damage some movements.
    .
That's why removing the battery or stopping the pendulum for an hour is a much better plan.
    .
Watches with a date dial don't all do well with going backwards with the dates.
    .

    I got cut off somehow!

Watches with a date dial don't all do well with going backwards with the dates.
    .
The last thing you want to hear is a CLANK sound and a sharp snap at the crown where your fingers are turning the watch backwards.
    .
So you should either check with the owner's manual or the manufacturer's website to see if it's okay to turn the time back an hour.
    .
You might have to settle for advancing the time 11 hours or 23 for watches with a date wheel.
    .
Then after achieving the proper time you'll have to adjust the date, which might mean turning it 30 days forward.
    .
I had a SWATCH that was that way, but somehow I lost it, probably while moving one of the many times.
    .
Swatch has an interesting history. I heard they were buying up other watch companies and getting really big.
    .
They were the new kid on the block at first, and the Swiss watch industry has no patience for upstarts.
    .
I got mine in Switzerland in 1985 for $23. That was the going rate when they were a new concept production.
    .
Now some of those first issue watches are worth over $200, but they have to be spanky new condition, not worn, that is.
    .
It was a real trooper -- took it swimming, SCUBA diving, skiing, no problems. PVC strap, lasted for over 20 years with daily use.
    .
Would lose a second each month but with a fresh battery was right on time for the first 6 months.
    .
The battery had its own access screw cap which I learned to appreciate, now I have a SEIKO with the same feature. Very nice.
    .
Makes it super easy to remove the battery and wait an hour in November each year.

You don't want to pop off the back on the SEIKO because it requires a special tool to re-attach the back.
    .
I discovered that a particular pair of mechanic's 1/2" drive sockets worked but now I can't find them, so much for that idea.

There's talk of getting rid of having to change time twice a year in California, but they're leaning toward making all 12 months Daylight Savings time.
    .
That would mean California would be the only region in the UTC -7 zone that is UTC -8 all year long.
    .
As if we were in the Pacific Ocean.
    .
Who knows, after "the Big One" that's exactly where we could end up anyway. HAHAHAHA
    .
Lots of people have a problem changing the time on their timepieces.
    .
Now if you think 53N is cold, imagine if you lived somewhere on Hudson Bay.
    .
That ought to be called the Hudson Sea. In the old days, it would have. Compare it to the Sea of Galilee in size, or the Caribbean Sea.
    .
I wonder if there are any old sickly bears on Hudson Bay?
