  • The title doesn't accept the <> symbols.

    The actual title is:

    Mass>Other Sacraments>Divine Office>Rosary?

Is this the order in regards to effectiveness/power?

My main inquiry is to ascertain the level of power of the Rosary compared to other things.

I know the Rosary is a substitute for the Divine Office for the laity, so I have seen it said that the Divine Office is more powerful than the Rosary.

What about the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin compared to the Rosary?

I wonder about these things because I have read in many places that the Rosary is the most potent weapon. I suppose it is implied, yes, after the Mass, but sometimes it seems they give more power to it than anything else.

This is not to denigrate the Holy Rosary in the least of course. I just read things like this and they make me wonder.

This is what Sister Lucia had to say about the Rosary:

Quote from: Sister Lucia of Fatima
There is no problem I tell you, no matter how difficult it is, that we cannot resolve by the prayer of the Holy Rosary. With the Holy Rosary we will save ourselves. We will sanctify ourselves. We will console Our Lord and obtain the salvation of many souls.  (Sister Lucia in an interview with Father Fuentes)

    I believe it....

Wow....  A thumbs down to the Rosary and Sister Lucia??????

I had the same reaction. I wish the person who did so would explain his reasoning.

However, I saw another member post a quote from St. Jerome - no comment, just his quote - and that got down thumbed.  Doesn't make sense without explanation.

  • I'm not sure it is proper to "rank" things like this.  I would say that the four things you mentioned are different, and leave it at that.

For example, I'm not sure it is correct to say that Mass--by which I assume you mean the Eucharist--somehow "outranks" the other Sacraments.  Each Sacrament exists for a different purpose, but I do not think it would be proper to say that one is superior to another.  True, the Eucharist is the very Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Christ, which deserves our utmost respect and worship, but the Eucharist is not necessary for salvation in the same way that Baptism is.  Similarly, the Eucharist cannot forgive sins in the same fashion that both Baptism and Confession can.  The list goes on.

Well, I have read that no matter how many Rosaries you pray, they will never equal 1 single Mass, as in the merits and graces you get from It.

Truly, the graces that flow from the Sacrifice on the Altar are immeasurable.

But what about all the people that do not have access to the True Sacrifice?

    What about them?

I believe it too, but she had access to the true Mass at that time, so this confuses me.

Yes, that's what most of us have been taught, that the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is the highest form of prayer - It is Calvary! So yes, I would say you could rank the 4 items noted.

For Catholics who cannot attend Mass, there is the offering of Holy Mass in Absencia http://www.dailycatholic.org/absentia.htm
and of course, devotions such as the Holy Rosary.

  • The difference is between private prayer and public prayer.

A Mass offered by a priest with only one server is Public prayer.
A group of 1,000,000 Faithful praying the Rosary outside the Vatican is still Private prayer.

It has to do with whose voice is used -- who is doing the praying, as it were. When Mass is said, or any of the Liturgy (including the Divine Office), it is said with the voice of the Church. It is the Church that prays. That is why it is so efficacious.

The Rosary is likely the most powerful "private" prayer. It is true that specific promises have been made about the Rosary, so it should not be ignored. It is very possible to attend daily Mass, recite parts of the Divine Office, and STILL pray 5 decades of the Rosary every day. I would know -- those were the spiritual duties of every seminarian (plus 30 min. Scripture reading and 30 min. spiritual reading).

So you don't have to choose between them or anything.

The fact remains that the Rosary has a special role to play in the age we live in (the days before the Chastisement -- and I do mean days!)

Isn't the Rosary a most efficacious way to receive graces?

No, the Rosary is not an efficacious way to recieve grace. We recieve grace from the sacraments efficasiously, that is from the fact that they are instituted by Christ for that purpose. So when a priest who is in mortal sin says mass, hears someone's confession, or administers baptism, those sacraments are valid and the recipient efficasiously recieves the sacrament. The term here is ex opere operantis Christi.
The Rosary on the other hand is a ascramental. We do not receive grace in the same way. We recieve grace through the prayers of the Church. The term here is ex operantis ecclesiae.
