Iced tea more expensive than Marijuana!

  • Nestea 3 oz. unsweetened ice tea mix has been discontinued! This is my "daily coffee".

I said I wanted TEA -- you know, regular iced tea -- not THAT kind of "tea"!

Decades ago "tea" was a slang term for Marijuana.

A 3 oz glass jar (like in the picture below) used to cost $3. Today they fetch between $50 and $100 on eBay. Bloody scalpers!
Seriously, how much is an ounce of pot these days? I bet it's cheaper than this iced tea mix now!

Apparently Nestle is populated by stupid &#^! idiots and has discontinued this product.

This is what I drink every single day. Apparently others have drank this for 50 years or more.

I have about 5 jars left personally. I feel like I should sell them for a ridiculous sum and then move on -- or at least I should put this on zigzag ("roll your own") paper and smoke it!
(Disclaimer: I'm kidding. I've never smoked anything, not even cigarettes)

It seems like it's a luxury item now; too precious to indulge in. I feel like each cup is costing me $4.

  • If Walmart has it, you can probably get 10,000 lbs of it from Sams.

In Colorado, between $120-250 for an ounce. All depends on the quality.

Best stick with the Nestea. Best bang for your buck!

  • Better order as many as you can while you can.
Appreciate your help, but both the 1 pack and the 4 pack are clearly marked "Out of Stock".
And in this case, it's "Out of Stock Forever" because the factory isn't making any more.

  • Ok, so $100 for 3 oz. of Nestea isn't quite as expensive as pot (at least legal, Colorado pot). What about the good old black market?

HOWEVER, considering that it's legal, and thus there is no risk for being in possession of it, you'd think a few bad guys would resort to stealing it from people's homes, small grocery stores, warehouses, etc. so they can sell it for hundreds of dollars on eBay! Then they can buy some REAL drugs with the proceeds.

    I mean, consider the calculus:

Make $500 with a risk of doing "5 to 10".
    or
Make $250 with no risk at all.

    Who would go with A

  • Thou might have to get yourself specially blended sweet tea bags and brew up a gallon or more at the time. I had to import Tetley tea sweet tea bags because sweet tea is not a Canadian thing. At least not the unsweetened stuff. Plenty of iced tea mixes otherwise, even with reduced sugar.

I did drink the real stuff during my many visits to the Deep South. Dixie-licious and easier to quaff a gallon than your average soda when the heat and humidity gang up on you. :D

  • I'm going to have to start brewing a pot of tea with tea bags every weekend and store it in milk jugs for during the week.

The strange thing is, there is no alternative out there for sale. Not even on the Internet.

Lipton is the closest, and it doesn't taste anywhere near the same. I have lipton for my decaf option -- but it has almost no flavor, at least after it sits in the cup for 1 hour. I have to mix it with Stevia to get any flavor at all. It tastes like water.

That's it. There were two options, completely different (not even close) and now we have only one option.

I hope someone rises to the occasion and comes up with a substitute.

There are a LOT of people out there, right now, interested in purchasing instant unsweet tea mix. Go visit any of Nestle's Facebook pages. People are nagging for this stuff on just about every post!

Whatever "einstein" decided to pull the plug on this unique, 50 year old product was a FRICKING IDIOT.

    For now, Capitalism has failed.

  • Frankly there must be something afoot that would make Nestea stop producing that particular brand of unsweetened sweet tea.

It is an insult to the South!!!!! ;)

Or maybe just a colossal FUBAR of a business decision.

  • It looks like a few unscrupulous scoundrels are trying to get in on the action, preying on ignorance. Lipton's iced tea powder is still for sale, it's only Nestea that was discontinued.

    Check Amazon.com. It's about $3.50 there.

  • I am fascinated with this quirky penchant for "iced tea". Hasn't anyone here heard of the teabag?
Just grab a cup, throw in a teabag, half-fill the cup with boiling water, let it stand till you achieve the preferred strength of flavour, add sugar or honey or have as is, add lemon juice or not, then fill the cup with ice. Cheap as chips!

I, myself, never consume tea. I used to but as it causes arthritis in me. I prefer coffee.

How The Tea Bag Was Invented

Legend says that brewing tea dates back to around 2737 BC, when tea leaves fell into water being boiled for Emperor Shennong of China. There does not appear to be any hard evidence of tea being discovered this way, but evidence we do have suggests that brewing tea did indeed likely start in China, first as part of a medicinal elixir. The first docuмented reference to this is found during the Shang Dynasty (1600 BC to 1046 BC). By the Qin Dynasty in the third century BC, it had become a relatively popular drink using just the tea (camellia sinensis), rather than mixed with other things as seems to have been common when used medicinally. From the beginning until the early 20th century, very little innovation came about in terms of the common method of brewing tea. This all changed in 1901.
Contrary to popular belief (and what every single tea manufacturer I could find said on their websites, and many-a-tea history book and paper consulted also stated), it was not tea merchant Thomas Sullivan who invented the tea bag in 1908. While he did (probably independently, given his reported design was quite inferior to the original) invent a tea bag that year, he was beat out by about seven years by Roberta C. Lawson and Mary Molaren of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
On August 26, 1901, the two intrepid women filed a patent (US723287) for a rather unique (at the time) "Tea-Leaf Holder" that is remarkably similar to the modern tea bag.
They had identified an issue with the way tea had been commonly brewed for thousands of years. In their own words, the traditional method of having to brew a whole pot at a time,
    Quote
involves the use of a considerable quantity of tea-leaves to prepare the desired supply of tea, and the tea, if not used directly, soon becomes stale or wanting in freshness, and therefore unsatisfactory, and frequently a large portion of the tea thus prepared and not used directly has to be thrown away, thus involving much waste and corresponding expense.

Thus, they invented an open-meshed woven cotton bag, "folded over upon itself and stitched along its side edges, forming a pocket-like construction having a flap at its open end… with the flap at the upper end folded down over the top end of the pocket and inclosed…"
A small portion of tea was then contained inside the enclosed cotton-mesh bag and allowed the preparer to place it "in a cup and have water poured thereon to produce only a cup of tea fresh for immediate use. By this means only so much of tea-leaves is used as is required for the single cup of tea, and thereby a cup of fresh. fragrant tea is prepared…"
About two years after the ladies filed their patent, it was granted on March 24, 1903. However, seemingly they were unsuccessful at bringing this to market, at least on any widespread scale that would have registered in docuмented history.
This brings us to Thomas Sullivan. Sullivan worked as a tea importer in New York when he (supposedly) accidentally invented tea bags in 1908. The story goes that Sullivan began sending small silk bags containing samples of the various forms of tea he sold to his customers as a way of encouraging sales.
The "accident" part is that a number of those people who he sent the bags of tea to decided to use the bag as something of a tea infuser, rather than opening the bags up and brewing the tea normally. As with Lawson and Molaren's aforementioned invention, this allowed a person to make a single cup of tea, rather than an entire pot, and made for much more convenient clean up- when done, simply toss the bag. No need to clean out all the tea leaves from the pot and strainer or infuser.
Help of Christians, guard our land from assault or inward stain,
Let it be what God has planned, His new Eden where You reign.
