  • ...the line was too long and I didn't get a chance to confess before mass. Does this mean I still need to go to confession at a different time?

  • If you have one or more mortal sins, yup.
    Matthew 5:37

But let your speech be yea, yea: no, no: and that which is over and above these, is of evil.

  • One must be in a state of grace (not conscious of any unconfessed mortal sin) and fasting to be able to receive Holy Communion.  Of course one may attend Mass and meet the Sunday obligation without necessarily receiving Holy Communion.

Yes--that is definitely what it means.  Are you still going to the SSPX Masses?

  • If I need to go to confession I always plan on getting to church as early as feasibly possible (or better yet I go to Saturday mass and make my confession then).  If the line is too long to confess on Sunday morning, I forego the partaking of Holy Communion and make a spiritual Communion.  I then plan my confession as soon as possible after Sunday Mass so I can take communion the following Sunday.  It's pretty much all about time management and planning.  My take on it is:  if I miss Confession I miss Holy Communion. I do this whether it's venial sins I'm confessing or (God forbid) mortal sins I'm confessing.   Better to be safe than sorry.

Remember, the priest gives you absolution twice during Mass so your venial sins are forgiven.  Why would you pass up the wonderful graces you would receive in Holy Communion?

It's one of my very few scruples I have.  I've always linked the two Sacraments together.  It's definitely something I have to pray about.

Scruples don't come from God.  Best get rid of them.
In this instance it would be best to follow the pronouncements and decisions of the church rather than your own interpretation.

Please do not let the devil stop you from receiving Holy Communion because of a venial sin. Please do reflect on your sins, and ask yourself whether you committed a mortal sin, or a venial one. There are specific things that are required for a mortal sin.

Mortal sin is a sin of grave matter
Mortal sin is committed with full knowledge of the sinner
Mortal sin is committed with deliberate consent of the sinner

If you are missing one of these elements, it's not a mortal sin. Please remember this, and do not become overscrupulous. You cannot accidentally commit a mortal sin.

    So let me ask you...

Today, I started day dreaming about something in the past, and I found myself getting angry to the point where I started thinking about physically harming someone. I then caught myself, after I had already thought it all through, then I realized to my self "#@$#%@#...I just committed mortal sin". Am I culpable for a mortal sin or a venial sin? Do I need to go to confession or will a prayer (or communion) do the trick?

I think it is often hard to tell if your sin was mortal or not, so I would suggest that you confess it.
