  • "I could care less about my family."

It's true!  They mean the world to me, so if I just valued them at $1M each, that would be caring less. There is plenty of room to go "down" when you're at a sky-high elevation.

Why do people use the expression "I could care less" when they really mean "I couldn't care less"?

Just an English lesson for the day.

  • These little quirks exist to confuse those trying to learn English & drive the English teachers crazy trying to explain them successfully.

  • Lol. It's true. Easier to learn Italian. English is a maze of confusion. So many words mean the same thing.

  • This is the main reason why our wise Church insisted on the Latin language, it means...free from errors, unchanging, words do not change their meanings.
    Please pray for my soul.

    Indeed.

    A dead language stays put.

  • "I could care less," "hot water heater," and "supposably" are probably my least favorites. I also hate when people say "ax" instead of "ask."
"This principle is most certain: The non-Christian cannot in any way be Pope. The reason for this is that he cannot be head of what he is not a member. Now, he who is not a Christian is not a member of the Church, and a manifest heretic is not a Christian, as is clearly taught by St. Cyprian, St. Athanasius, St. Augustine, St. Jerome, and others. Therefore, the manifest heretic cannot be Pope." -- St. Robert Bellarmine

  • I hate "benefit of the doubt".  It makes no sense.
Amen quippe dico vobis donec transeat caelum et terra iota unum aut unus apex non praeteribit a lege donec omnia fiant  (For amen I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot, or one tittle shall not pass of the law, till all be fulfilled. )

  • Because they are American.  I have never heard a non American English speaker say "I could care less".  It is an exclusively American mistake.

How the n't got dropped I have no idea.

    Matthew,

Apparently the three people who down thumbed your post are offended by grammar.
Stir up within Thy Church, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the Spirit with which blessed Josaphat, Thy Martyr and Bishop, was filled, when he laid down his life for his sheep: so that, through his intercession, we too may be moved and strengthen by the same Spir

  • How about:

"You know mean?"... for .."Do you know what I mean?"
"Some preachers will keep silence about the truth, and others will trample it underfoot and deny it. Sanctity of life will be held in derision even by those who outwardly profess it, for in those days Our Lord Jesus Christ will send them not a true Pastor but a destroyer."  St. Francis of Assisi

  • I remember trying to explain to an American how "bollocks" meant something was rubbish whereas "Dog's bollocks" meant it was great.

I've never heard it said. I've heard "I couldn't care less" though.

So is it an Americanism? Are there other non-American English speakers out there to answer the query?

Phew! That was close. Just got it before the cement dried! Didn't see your post till after I posted the above, ggreg.
