  • Last night the guy predicted an earthquake off the coast of Calif.  and it just happened.  Not only that he was right on the recent earthquakes, he has worked out a science not quackery.  He is going live in a few moments.

Check him out and see for yourself.  I for one am impressed.

    Please pray for my soul.

The history of naming tropical storms is informative -- even the part where we get the name "hurricane."
    .
Note:  what we today call "hurricanes" with names of persons, used to be given names of patron saints based on their feast day when the storm was first noticed -- they say "occurred" but in those days a storm could have been two or three days old before anyone noticed it happening!
    .

    HOW ARE HURRICANES NAMED?
    • Native Americans called these storms Hurakons, after “a great spirit who commanded the east wind.” Spanish explorers adopted the word and then began giving hurricanes the names of patron saints on whose feast days the storms occurred. Later, hurricanes were identified by their longitude and latitude.
    .
    • A weatherman in Australia is credited with being the first person to name a tropical storm after a female. By World War II, meteorologists in the U.S.military named storms after their girlfriends and wives. Atlantic hurricanes began to be officially given women’s names starting in 1954 and men’s names in 1979.

Now, if enough people contact the World Meteorological Association and request that Maria be "Retired" from their list because it was costly and destructive, they'll take it off, and then it won't be there in the future.
    .
However, if they do that, Maria will be then ensconced in the list of especially destructive storms, which goes like this:

These storms have been some of the most destructive, costly, and deadly in U.S. history.

I put in bold the names that I can recall offhand as being severe hurricanes.
    .
I'm surprised to see there are so many retired names I don't recognize.
    .
As it now stands, I would expect Harvey, Irma and Maria will be removed from the list because of their destruction this year.
    .
That means they will be replaced with other names beginning with the same letter, and next year's cycle will have the updated version.
    .
When the 6-year cycle is over they'll come up with a new list, kind of like the 6 year Chapter of the SSPX for electing a new Superior. ;D

  • It is sad when meteorologists use names of our holy saints and/or God for storms.

You have it backwards: The names that began to be applied to Hurricanes in the mid-20th Century were used because they were common among people alive in those years [‡].  Those were common by reüse from elder relatives, either from a sense of duty & tradition (e.g.: keeping the name of one's dearly departed grandfather used by at least 1 living member of a family), or from special love for a relative.  Those names can be traced in many cases back thro' the generations to an infant who received the name of a favored saint.  Isn't that the basis for the name day tradition?

  • Neil! I've never know you to be wrong before.
    .
Of course there is a St Hilary.

Bishop of Poitiers and Doctor of the Church.
Help of Christians, guard our land from assault or inward stain,
Let it be what God has planned, His new Eden where You reign.

Yes, there is a St. Hilary of Poitiers, and there is SIR (not "saint") Edmund Hillary, but there is no saint named "Hillary."
