Maria was predicted to be a cat 4 as it approached Puerto Rico, and then would be the strongest storm there in 85 years.
    .
    Quote
All of these maps underscore just how strong Maria has already become — and how much more power it may gain as it moves toward land. The hurricane is first expected to first hit Dominica and Martinique at 8 pm EST on Monday. By Wednesday, the continually-strengthening storm is projected to make direct landfall on Puerto Rico as a Category 4 Hurricane — the strongest storm to do so in 85 years. The governor of the U.S. territory has already declared a state of emergency and evacuations have already been ordered.
    .
However, it has become a cat 5 to everyone's surprise, and as such will be "the strongest storm ever to cross Puerto Rico."
    .
What they really mean to say is, the strongest storm in modern history.

Hurricane Maria left a trail of destruction as it hit the Caribbean island of Dominica as a Category 5 storm and then battered Guadeloupe with powerful winds early Tuesday.

Forecasters warned that the storm could leave some parts of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands uninhabitable for months.

    Quote
“So far we have lost all what money can buy and replace."

Roosevelt Skerrit, the prime minister of Dominica, wrote on Facebook that his roof was gone, that his home was flooded and that he was "at the complete mercy of the hurricane" after Maria made landfall Monday night. A few minutes later, the politician reported that he had been rescued.

"My focus now is in rescuing the trapped and securing medical assistance for the injured," Skerrit added. "We will need help, my friend, we will need help of all kinds."

NBC News meteorologist Bill Karins highlighted that Maria was one of the fastest intensifying hurricanes ever recorded. It blew up from a tropical storm into a major Category 5 hurricane in barely more than a day.

"Dominica had very little time to prepare for this monster," Karins said. "I fear what we will see during the daylight hours from Dominica and Guadeloupe. They had little time to prepare for the strongest storm of their lifetimes."

A U.S.-based spokeswoman for the Rosalie Bay Resort, which is located on the east coast of Dominica, told NBC News they had lost contact with staff late Monday. The last message from a manager arrived about 45 minutes after Maria made landfall and stated the situation was "really bad and very scary."

Karins said it's only the second time in recorded history that two Category 5 hurricanes have made landfall in a hurricane season. The last year in which two Category 5 hurricanes hit land in the Atlantic basin was 2007, when Dean and Felix killed 174 people in Mexico and Central America. They were so destructive that both of their names were retired.

CI gets more hits with flat-earthers' posts complaining about satellite photos, when they deny the existence of satellites.

BTW every time you use the Internet you're making use of satellite technology for your information processing.

Now that you mention it, I don't recall ever seeing a non-CG image of satellites. Surely one satellite could take pictures of other satellites (if they existed, that is).

  • It is sad when meteorologists use names of our holy saints and/or God for storms.

The Holy Virgin Mary always comes to the aid of those who seek her in prayer.
Jesse and Jesus are names for our Savior.

Sci America said that soon there should be a Category 6. That should give some indication that these storms are not of God, but are engineered.
    Something sinister cometh our way.
    Lord have mercy.

I agree that storms shouldn't be named after our holy saints.  But then so many saints had names that are common today. It really bothers me that this new hurricane has the name of 'Maria.'

I wouldn't mind if it were named Hilary instead. But then there's probably a St. Hilary somewhere in Church history.

I do think that God sends chastisements in the form of what appears to be a natural disaster. But you're right. It could be engineered. It's just that mankind has become some very sinful, and not living according to God's laws. That's why I think that these disasters could be a chastisement.

    .
It seems you wouldn't be posting this message if you knew how the process works by which names are assigned to hurricanes.
    .
When enough complaints are received about how they name storms they eventually will change their method. This happened a few years ago when they started to include male names, since hurricanes had traditionally only had female names. If you don't want to see names of saints used for hurricanes you have to get people to complain a lot about that and maybe the list of names waiting for future storms will be amended to exclude particular names of saints.
    .
But it seems a bit of a stretch to expect they could eliminate ALL the saints' names, because there are so many of them. Ultimately, if everyone who is in some way offended by the use of a certain name were to complain about it, for the weather service to eliminate that name they would be left with a smaller and smaller list to work from because there would likely be someone offended by the use of practically any name.
    .
Maria has been downgraded to a "one" and then back up to a "three" -- this is not a capricious or arbitrary designation. The category of a hurricane is consequent to the measured velocity of its winds. Therefore, a hurricane of category 5 is called a "5" because wind measurements are faster than 157 mph. And a cat 3 storm has sustained winds of 111 to 129 mph. There can be gusts faster than the range but that doesn't change the category. So a cat 3 hurricane can have wind gusts of 157 mph without being upgraded to a cat 4 or a cat 5.

    .
You're expecting the weather service to do something it would never do. If they were going to "replace" a name like Maria, they would never substitute Hillary for it. There is a very simple reason for this. Hillary doesn't begin with M.
    .
All the names of hurricanes come from a list of names that is generated long in advance of the arrival of the storms. The names are all arranged alphabetically, such that hurricane Andrew is followed by hurricane Bernice, then hurricane Charles, Diana, Edward, Felicia, Gregory, Hillary, Isis, James, etc. If you wanted Hillary in there, you're 6 storms too late. Let's see, there is Saint Andrew, so they shouldn't use that name, and there's Saint Charles, Saint Edward, Saint Felicity, Saint Gregary and Saint James. But no Saint Hillary, thank goodness. Oh, and using "Isis" might offend Egyptians or Moslems.
    .
So if you're asking them to replace Maria with another name it would have to be Martine, Maxine, Mildred, Mabel, Melanique, Margaret or Moposequetaka. But since Martine and Margaret are both saints' names, the list gets accordingly shorter.

Hurricane Maria Strikes the Caribbean Leaving Destruction in Its Wake
    .
The devastation of this recent series of storms is unprecedented in modern history.
    .

    .
This last one was taken the next day, showing the bottom tail end of Jose barely visible on the top of the frame near New England.
    .
The closeup segment zooms in on Puerto Rico which took a direct hit from Maria/Myrna:
    .

    .
There has been Harvey, Irma, Jose, Katia, Maria... next will come Nate, Ophelia, Philippe, Rina, Sean, Tammy, Vince and Whitney.
    .
Lee must have been used for a storm that didn't make the headlines. Note there is no name starting with Q or U, X or Z.
    .
I don't know why, because they could have used Quincy, Ursula, Xerxes and Zeno, for example.
    .
Here is the list they come from (the Come From List):
    .
    HURRICANE NAMES FOR 2017

ATLANTIC TROPICAL (AND SUBTROPICAL) STORM NAMES FOR 2017

    Arlene
    Harvey
    Ophelia

    Bret
    Irma
    Philippe

    Cindy
    Jose
    Rina

    Don
    Katia
    Sean

    Emily
    Lee
    Tammy

    Franklin
    Maria
    Vince

    Gert
    Nate
    Whitney

    .
Again, if you'd like them to change a name you have to contact them far in advance because once the storm arrives they don't want to go back telling all the reporting agencies that a name was changed so they have to amend their bulletins, etc.
