And, just to clarify, that's one hour before reception of Holy Communion, not one hour before the start of Mass.
Which means, in essence, you're only being asked not to eat anything during the Mass itself... So as long as you're not scarfing down hot dogs during the Gospel reading or shoveling fistfuls of nachos down your gullet during the Nicene Creed, you're observing the current communion fast...
Which leads me to the inescapable conclusion that the discipline of the communion fast, in practice, no longer exists.
