  • My granddaughter attending a wedding this past week at ICC in Post Falls, Idaho, a SSPX Chapel, Immaculate Conception Church.

My granddaughter a graduate of Mount St. Michael in Spokane CMRI was surprised to learn that the fast for Holy Communion is only one hour as she was told by others there.  Is that correct?
    Please pray for my soul.

  • The post-conciliar fasting laws before Communion is one hour from food and non-water liquids (still three hours for alcohol, I believe).  Per the 1983 code.
"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

  •   :whistleblower::ready-to-eat: :alcohol: :popcorn:
Technically, the minimum is one hour.  Better is three hours.  Best is from midnight, including water.  The SSPX usually goes with three hours for solid food and alcohol, one hour for other liquids, water any time.  Recc. you ask the Holy Ghost!
St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.

  • And, just to clarify, that's one hour before reception of Holy Communion, not one hour before the start of Mass.

Which means, in essence, you're only being asked not to eat anything during the Mass itself... So as long as you're not scarfing down hot dogs during the Gospel reading or shoveling fistfuls of nachos down your gullet during the Nicene Creed, you're observing the current communion fast...

Which leads me to the inescapable conclusion that the discipline of the communion fast, in practice, no longer exists.

Exactly my sentiment, which is what I told my granddaughter, why bother calling it a fast; where is the sacrifice?   When I was a child the fast was midnight on, the nuns would tell us that God must come first into our body, before any food.

I realize the fast was relaxed because many people in those days were fainting in Church, I remember seeing them.  Also it was keeping many people away from receiving Our Lord.

    Please pray for my soul.

This is what our present SSPX priest says.

  • I am happy to hear that, but why the word "usually" it should be the same in each SSPX church, don't you agree.

I am so sorry to even bring this up, it is just that my grandchildren often attend Mass at ICC in Post Falls, Idaho, as well as at the Mount.  You see the churches are close enough that they have made many friends with the SSPX younger generation, and I hate to see this idea of relaxed laws coming into play to confuse them.

I don't know what to tell them if ICC goes toward Modern.
    Please pray for my soul.

  • I observe the old code personally, but it shouldn't be all that surprising that some chapels observe the new one.

  • I am surprised, the Roman Catholic Church should be ONE, Holy and Apostolic, One in its teachings.

It is serious because  deliberately breaking the fast and receive is a sin...

It is.  A discipline is different than a teaching, which the laws of fasting are.  Now, that's not an acquittal of the 1983 code and it's virtual elimination of these disciplines.  The crisis breeds confusion.  The SSPX 'accepts' the new code (at least, the parts that aren't sacrilegious, i.e., communicatio in sacris)  but their acceptance of purely disciplinary laws, while lamentable, is not the same as accepting an erroneous or heretical teaching.

  • I would think that the Bishop would make the law for each Country the same.

Is it up to each priest to decide?   Each priest or pastor deciding would not make any sense, and your right it adds to  confusion.  Then again, you would be able to see who were the liberal priest.
