  • You better access the parental controls. Pornographic material is available even on the basic channels. Also if you scroll down to the 500s there are explicitly pornographic channels available to purchase, but you can still read absolutely filthy descriptions of what they are featuring, so lock those. Also beware of Spike, History Channel, Discovery Channel, LMN, and other channels available with the basic package.

Allow your children to enjoy the TV though!

  • DTV's give off lots of radiation. Just stand in front of one for a while and you will feel it. Katara and I sure did the first time we came across an HDTV.

  • Be sure to block MTV and VH1. Those channels feature nothing but filth, i.e. they promote promiscuous behavior for young girls and women, sodomy, and miscegenation.

    Miscegenation is not a sin.

  • Yes, Clare, but many people could (and do) say the same thing about TV, going to the mall, etc.

Also, you'll note that "it's not a sin" doesn't carry a whole lot of weight here. CathInfo is NOT Fisheaters.

We're more interested in God's design for things, the way things should be, etc.

And all the things I mentioned (TV, the mall, and mixing races) is usually not in your own best interest.

God meant marriage to bring families together -- and while it's true the Catholic Faith trumps everything, and can be a great bridge, it's also true that you want to find someone SOMEWHAT LIKE yourself and what you're used to.

Plenty of failed/split/troubled marriages can attest to this. You can't just take two people and make a marriage just because they "hit it off" at one time or another.

In theory, two cholerics could stay married 50 years until death. But usually a choleric seeks out someone more passive, and those marriages work out much better. Same goes for poor vs. rich and many other categories.

That's why classic wisdom advises things like, "What does his mom think of her?" "Does she get along with his family?" etc. More often than not, they are good indicators of how the marriage will go.

God has his ways, the Devil has his, and when you stick to God's plan and ways of doing things, everything goes along more smoothly.

I attended a very mixed-race public high school. And I'll tell you what -- everyone, for the most part, stuck with "their own kind" even though there were no forced segregation rules. You should have seen the lunch room! It looked like 1920's America.

  • And let's put it a simpler way --

If the IDEAL were to have one race, with one common culture, then why did God's design (as we see it today) call for various countries, nations and peoples?

The liberals of today would complain to God that there are different races.

I guess this would be the "reductio ad absurdam" argument.

The fact that the Church does not condemn a thing, and furthermore, actually permits it, should carry some weight!

So am I. And miscegenation does not go against God's design.

    Usually. Not necessarily always.

    I'm not disagreeing.

And plenty of failed marriages are monoracial. Race may be a factor, for some couples, maybe even most, but marriages between two Catholics of different races are not sinful. The SSPX conducts plenty of them!

But none of this is set in stone. There is no Church teaching that cholerics are better off marrying phlegmatics! It may be the case, that in general they are better matches. But it is not a sin for a choleric to marry a choleric.

Not necessarily. He doesn't always gives His greatest saints the easiest rides.

No problem. I'm not into social engineering either way.

I was just saying that miscegenation is not sinful.

The Church forbids marriages between Catholics and Protestants, but in practice allows them as well! Marriage between Catholics of different races isn't even forbidden.

If Catholics can marry Protestants, they can marry Catholics of another race!

I think this is the word that was meant.

Who has said that it is ideal to have one race with one culture?

I just said that the Church permits mixed race marriages.

The kind of purity needed to get one into Heaven is not the racial kind.

Anyhow, Our Lord commanded that the gospel be preached to all the diverse nations of the world. In that sense,  it is ideal for the world to have one common Christian culture.

No, the word meant was miscegenation, not misogyny. I can't imagine many of the menfolk here condemning MTV for encouraging misogyny! lol!

  • I might raise hell with this, but I am one hundred percent against miscegenation. I just find it so strange. For example, I know many children that are half-Vietnamese half-Caucasian and they just seem to live in this limbo between two cultures. I think its a bit cruel on the children - they don't fit in with either group.

I think that races should stay where they are.

  • Here's my favourite example of race-mixing, as carried out by Ss Cosmas & Damian:
