  • Like the rhythmical flow of rap, but hate the lyrics you usually find in America?

  • All manner of Rap is a Jєωιѕн Negro invention purposed to the destruction of valid musical forms, subverting Christian culture,
and corrupting the minds of the young.  To see whites acting in the manner of Detroit street thugs is deplorable, but then that is the plan isn't it?

  • This is an example of what real German music is.

Rap is vile and meant to pervert the west. Burn it.

The rap you've heard in America, maybe.

Not all rap is "gangsta" rap, nor is it all about the same subject matter.

All rap is, in its essence, is poetry with a certain beat and music in the background. Sure, this particular form places rhythm first (as opposed to melody) which is a reversal of sorts, which in the big picture seems to put the emotions ahead of reason.

But nevertheless, it's not like it takes away our free will, and there's nothing sinful about it as long as the lyrics are clean.

Otherwise we'd have to condemn all poetry which has no melody, but only meter and rhyme. How does reciting a poem inherently corrupt the youth?

  • I think everyone agrees that classical music is culturally and artistically superior. But rap is popular music and not really comparable to classical. Classical music is made for grand occasions for a more refined audience, whereas popular music is mainstream and made for a more contemporary audience. It's easy to find Catholic choral music. It's easy to find classical music in general. It's near impossible to find a popular musician that sings Catholic songs.

  • Let's not forget to include some fine Geman/Austrian folk music... I grew up listening to this type of music. I love it!

  • I can understand what Matthew is trying to say. Every now and then I might find a foreign song with rap that is actually not unpleasant. One example I would make is the following, which, as far as my poor French understands, is clean and is about two friends apologizing for being inconsistent. Maybe someone with better French could correct me if wrong?

  • My point is that this particular music, and I qualify the use of the term, is such that it appeals to the lower instincts and passions of men. It is decadent and can in no way raise a man's soul mind to higher things and towards their natural end.

We are all corrupted by the toxic culture around us and this another example of that.

  • I think that hip hop (rap is the vocal delivery-- hip hop is the genre; you wouldn't call opera or rock and roll "singing"), supposing it is unobjectionable lyrically and that the rhythm isn't decadent, has utility for energy (say, working out), creativity, and entertainment (e.g. parody songs).

I agree with Matthew in principle.  Essentially, it's poetry with a drum beat.  Though 99% of what's out there (and basically 100% of what you hear on the radio) is utter trash, there's a gem here or there.  But it's like finding good stand up comedy.  Highly elusive, and usually not worth the trouble.

Agree in part with JPaul, it isn't particularly noble.  People are only having this discussion if they are already prepared to indulge in at least some sort of distraction on earth.  But we do that every time we play a board game, talk about sports, or have a barbecue, so really it's a question of degree.  Moderation and discretion is obviously key.

    An old classic:

"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

  • The problem with Mithrandylan's submission is that it gives a nod to the decrepit "gangsta rap" scene -- even if it's mocking it a bit. Imitation is the highest form of flattery.

Marteria, on the other hand, has nothing in common with the American rap scene.

Here is another one of my favorites: the first rap ever to start out, "Ja, ich bin ein großer Elefant" ("yes, I am a big elephant.")

And also the first rap to rhyme the word "Medulla Oblongata" (a medical term for a specific part of the brain).
Leave it to the Germans! hahaha

Ramm' meine Stoßzähne in dein hoch geliebtes Land
Eure primitiven unteren Zehntausend sehen Schwarz
Meine Hundelunge brennt, doch Wunden heilen

Kein Glaube, kein Schicksal, kein Zufall, kein Karma
Hab' Jura studiert, mein Verstand Medulla Oblongata
