  • It has come to my attention that a few people are engaged in what could be called heated debates -- to say the least.

I just want to state my position on such things, so that there are no misunderstandings.

CathInfo is a place where everyone can have their say -- I won't censor one or the other sides, based on who agrees or disagrees with me.

Think about this one -- no, really -- think long and deep about this: Two people get into a heated argument on Cathinfo. When WOULDN'T both parties wish to see the other one banned for being stubborn, uncharitable, backwards, liberal, reactionary, you name it?

See what I mean? You will ALWAYS -- in any intense debate -- wish you could go to the moderator and ask for the ultimate insult for your opponent -- a silencing.

But that is not what I'm dishing out here at Cathinfo.

At any rate, I seem to get a bunch of PMs almost *every time* a 4+ page thread comes up. People ask me to take sides, to squelch the opposition, etc.

In short, please keep your debates to yourselves. I only provide an impartial forum -- practicing charity, growing in virtue, embracing the truth, and saving one's soul are things that each individual has to do for themselves. My job is to provide the truth for those who seek it, as well as complete freedom for truth-seekers.

CathInfo is a big trough of cool, clean, refreshing water. Or rather, I should say that Cathinfo HAS many clean clear troughs of water -- but there are also a few troughs that have been soiled in one way or another. No matter -- at least a decent beverage can be found here, for those with a working sense of smell.

Cathinfo is not to be thought of like a private home, where I might kick out people I don't like. It's more like a public library where all kinds of imperfect people may enter, check out books, etc. as long as they don't break any laws.

    Sincerely,

    Matthew

  • It's called the First Amendment and it doesn't look like we will  have it much longer.

  • How does the First Amendment apply to a website, which can be read by individuals all over the globe?
"In this difficult time, to be victorious, we must be steadfast using all of our strength and capabilities like brave soldiers fully armed in the battlefield ... Whatever happens, behave in such a way that God will be glorified."

  • It seems to me that for the moment, at least we are subject to American law if we live here in America.

You are both apparently suggesting an outside authority of some sort..............?????????

  • And I am sorry HM but if you look up the Latin root of the word nice ---it is nicere===to not want to know something.

And an ostrich sticks his head in the ground  not to hide but to hear approaching footsteps of his natual enemy; whomever that may be.

  • I am no expert on internet or international law, but I would theorise that the First Amendment would not apply to any and all posters on this or any web message board, just because the site itself is being hosted in America.

    Can anyone clarify this issue?

  • Someone might invoke the first amendment to defend the content of his own site should he be in trouble for it.

However, when you post on a private moderated forum, you can be banned, your post erased, censured, or anything else and you have no recourse.  It's the owner of the forum who enforces his own standards of decency.

First amendment, also, is very ill adapted to the Internet medium, as it was written 200 years ago.

Hooray! The so-called 'right' of unlimited free speech is certainly not recognized by the Catholic Church. However, I just hope that the government which suspends the first ammendment will be a CATHOLIC government.

  • A true Catholic government would ENFORCE  the First Amendment properly--not suspend it. I can't believe I'm hearing calls for Communist PC
