  • I have just recently came across the subject of the Holy Gift of Tears. I’ve never heard of it before, can anyone verify whether this is actual Catholicism or just a bunch of charismatic emotion/feelings baloney? Tried doing a little research and could only find NO/charismatic leaning stuff.

    Thank you!
Please disregard everything I have said; I have tended to speak before fact checking.

  • Remember this about Saint Mary Magdalen:

" In order to know what great love is, one should study the beautiful penitent, who washed the feet of Jesus with the water of her tears and dried them with the towel of her hair.
Saint Mary Magdalen’s audacity, her courage, her eagerness, gave Christian love a true impetus in all the saints that followed her. She was an outstanding girl, the love-flamings of whose heart, the love-anguishing of whose soul, consoled Our Lord when He needed comfort most when His feet were pierced by nails, His head by thorns, and His heart by man’s ingratitude.
God would gladly make the world for the love one girl can give. Our Blessed Lady is God’s perfect maiden. But next to Our Lady, Saint Mary Magdalen is the girl in the life of Our Lord whom He most loved. She was His overwhelming favorite because her love was the kind that never counts the costs. Her bright eyes were always full of tears for Jesus alive and sitting at a feast, for Jesus dead and laid in a tomb."
    Please pray for my soul.

  • Thinking about this subject a childhood memory came to my mind.  Think I will add this to my blog.

    Pious Belief not a dogma

Here is a little story, I am sure many of you, especially those who attended Catholic Schools back in the 40's - 50's  (like me) have heard.

One happy, perfect day in heaven it was decided a contest was in the making for the angels.  The rules were they would fly down to the round earth and find a gift for the Baby Jesus.  Whosoever would find the best gift was the winner.

Anxious as they all were they came down to earth and looked for that most treasured gift.  One angel found the most beautiful flower, with a luxurious fragrance that seemed to fill the entire forest.

Another angel witnessed the birth of a perfect child with locks of hair that seemed to cover the entire head.  So the angel just clipped one to take it back to heaven.

Several angels brought back nuggets of pure gold and silver, while still, others found gems that shone like the sun.  Others even captured the golden rays from the sun, wrapped them up and carried them back to heaven.

One little angel left with nothing to bring since it seemed that everything already was presented to the new-born King.
The little angel wandered around with his wings held down, still looking, never giving up.  Upon passing a Church the angel heard some sobbing, listening through the walls, angels can do that you already know, he saw a human crying in the confessional with tears rolling down their cheeks.  The little angel carefully took up just one tear and quickly brought it to the Baby Jesus.

Can you guess what treasure that the King was pleased with the best?  Which of all gifts was the one that pleased Him the most?
    Yes, you are correct.

    End of the story
    Please pray for my soul.

The Gift of Tears is a mystical experience that is part of the Traditional Spirituality of the Church.  Many religious (some of them later canonized) and ordinary laypeople have been given this gift at various times in their lives -- often for purposes of being drawn closer to God.
St. Teresa of Avila, St. Ignatius of Loyola and St. Augustine all had the gift.  Many more, too.
