  • What recommendations would you make for history books written from a Catholic point of view?  I'm not thinking of text books, but books written for the average reader.

    Thanks,
    Marsha

  • The books by William Thomas Walsh are very readable and informative.

Any particular area of history you are interested in?

  • Anne Carroll's Christ the King - Lord of History is a good read. Many use it as a textbook, but it doesn't read like one.

  • I've also read parts of Seven Lies About Catholic History which was also good. (That one is available as an ebook too from tanbooks.com)

I doubt you'd hear many complaints about any of the books listed here and they're all pretty widely available, so you can likely find used copies of most of them if you're interested in such.

I was going to say all of it, but now that I think about it I'd like to know more about individual countries, e.g. France or Spain, rather than an overview of all the western world.

Thanks for that link, I had not seen that one before.  Do you have any favorite sites for finding used books?

I've heard good things about other sites such as Paperback Swap, but have only ever used Amazon for buying and selling used books.

In that case Walsh's books on Spain will be most enlightening and enjoyable reads.

For websites, Amazon is good for newer books. If you are looking for older, rare, out of print, etc books than AbeBooks is a very good site for finding titles that are either hard to find or extremely expensive on Amazon. University libraries are also very good resources, although you can't buy books from them. Many public libraries also have good resources - you can use the inter-library loan system to check-out practically any book in the world from your local library.
