I received a "Messenger (1new)" in red today.

After clicking on it the screen said "To use you must be an established member."

How do you become an established member?

or

Do I have the process in retrieving messages wrong?

Also I looked up "Members" and found that I am registered with a reputation number of 11.

What does the 11 mean?

You can't read IMs until a week after you've been a member.

You start out with a reputation of 10. It goes up when someone likes your posts. If someone thumbs down your post, you lose 1/3 of a rep point.
