Heavy Duty Rosary from the Philippines?

  • Hi,

This may be reaching but, a couple years ago the SSPX Monks (among them Fr. Alphonsus Maria) gave a retreat at our church. While here they sold solid rosaries that, I believe, they got from a convent in the Philippines. This rosary has been extremely rugged (carried in my pocket) and I would like to buy a few of them for my friends and family members. But I can't find where they were made. I even tried calling the Retreat House in Los Gatos without luck. I think they came with a little pamphlet, but I've managed to lose that.

Does anyone else have one of these and/or know where they can be bought?

    Thank you for any information.

  • Are they the ones made with some kind of gray seeds that are kind of shiny? I think they are made by the sisters of St. Joseph? I bought one during the Redemptorist mission when Fr Alfonsius Maria was here. I think there are still a couple in our book shop. They are indeed very sturdy. I'll check .

That sounds right. The shiny seeds are "Job's tears," which also seem to be very sturdy when used in rosaries. Thanks for checking to see if you have any and, if possible, I would like to get contact information for the Sisters of Joseph as I would like to keep tract of this source for the future -- actually I'm currently looking for four or five of these.

    Thank you.

Opened an Etsy shop for my handmade Rosaries

I absolutely love making and praying the rosary and so I thought "why not make them for others?". I've seen many websites selling unattractive and very expensive rosaries and figured I could make much nicer ones that aren't as expensive. I only listed two for now, as Etsy charges for each item listed for sale. All rosaries have been or will be blessed by a priest before shipping, as I know some of the faithful are unable to leave home to do this themselves. Check out the link. Thanks!

When I first read this, I thought I had your answer, then I read the following:

Did you know you were looking for Job's tears beads in the first post?
If so, why didn't you say so?

Because I thought that by "solid" you meant that they were solid metal,
instead of hollow, like most metallic beads are, especially the precious
metal ones like silver or gold.

If non-metallic, then it would be plastic or stone or seeds or wood, all of
which are "solid," so your asking for "solid" beads would be of no help
in knowing which type of bead it is you want to find.  Just asking...

  • I forgot about mineral (including but not limited to glass, gemstone, crystal,
hematite, jade, onyx, howlite, jasper, granite, quartz, carborundum),
synthetic (including epoxy, bakelite, resorcinol glue), clay, putty, leather,
pressed rose petal, cellulose, carved bone, ivory, seashell, pearl.....

-- all of which are solid.

Hi friends, you may have noticed things have slowed down with the store, the product offerings, and just the site in general. After the quality issues, and my stock out in October I was overwhelmed with other issues and small projects that demanded my attention. I appreciate your loyalty in continuing to visit and send emails; I am sorry for the small delay in service. I am working to iron out the final details for getting the affiliate agreement up, and finally waiting to take delivery on the next batch of raw materials to build more rosaries.

I will be here in time for Christmass!

You make a good point Neil! Ah well, his rosary beads may be indestructible but his business venture may not! Yes, I did stray with both my posts! In fact the first site I mentioned quotes nearly $90 for one item.......  The Op did mention SSPX Monks and the Philippines. Fr Onoda in Manila may be able to help him.

I knew it was a Job's Tears rosary at the beginning, but I just imagined that anyone who had been to the Redemptorist mission would know what kind of rosary it was. The reason I mentioned "solid" was because this is a solid rosary and I wanted people to know why I was looking for this specific one.

My apologies for pointing you in the wrong direction.
