  • Factory work is tough enough for eight hours a day and soon I am having to go to a 12 hour shift where I will miss Mass every other Sunday.

People are getting more demented and immoral everyday. I probably heard swearing from prideful people about thirty + times at work yesterday.

I want a different job, I don't know what to do.  I wish us Catholics had easier decisions with more better choices. I have prayed to God for a long time for a different job so I can attend mass more often and now I will have to miss mass every other Sunday.

  • You are right, modern society has absolutely no respect for Sunday.  Your only way out is to train to do something else.  Trade school?  Junior College/College? Apprenticeship?

One of my son's friends went to his local International Brotherhood of Electricians hall/office and they are going to take him on as an electrician "assistant".  He has absolutely no experience but they are desperate for young men who are willing to work, will be on time, and stay off drugs.  They have a 5 year apprenticeship program that he will be able to do.  Of course these arrangements may vary by location/trade but it would be good to look into something other than factory work since you are not happy there.

At least as a tradesman you have the possibility of ultimately having your own business where you can set the standards.

Don't be discouraged, there are always options.  You will no doubt have to make some sacrifices in order to change your prospects, but with prayer the good Lord will give you strength to make them.

  • I would hate for you to get out of factory work my friend since we need more factory workers in this country making goods but yes it is indeed a mark of an immoral society. Under the Civil Rights Act they cannot discriminate against you (technically) because of your religion so I would go to your boss and tell him that. Is there a union you fall under? The problem with that again is that this sick country relocates factories overseas if American workers demand too much. The sin is theirs my friend, not yours, and we know the offenses you are working under cry out to Heaven for vengeance against the greed of these insane rich types. I don't know if you work in a "Right to Work" state either, because if you do a boss can fire you if you try and weasel your way out of work.

  • Truth is Eternal,

If you can find a better job, that suits you Catholic lifestyle, by all means take it, but this particular verse from the Bible is one of my favorite and perfect for today's Catholic.

Romans 5; verse 20  "Now the Law intervened that the offense might abound.  But where the offense has abounded, grace has abounded yet more; so that as sin has reigned unto death, so also grace may reign by justice unto life everlasting through Jesus Christ, our Lord"

The way I understand this is, when surrounded by more sin, you will have more grace.

    Please pray for my soul.

  • I also have to work a couple of Sundays a month - I work in retail, so I basically have no say-so in my schedule, if I want to keep my job.  I have no other job skills, and I am partially disabled (I am not able to lift more than 15lbs); it took me almost a year to find a job where I did not have to do any heavy lifting.  I am very thankful that I have this job, even though it doesn't pay much.  God knows my situation, and I am sure that He understands what I am going through.  He knows that I have to make a living to survive and pay my bills so I will have a roof over my head, food to eat and clothes to wear.  Sometimes we have to do what we don't want to do, but if it means keeping a job, especially during these hard times when so many are unemployed, then we do it.

  • The Man at my chapel who used to take the collections was unemployed for a long time after he was injured. Recently, he finally got a new job working at a hospital. Sadly, he now has to work on some Sundays so we don't get to see him at Mass every week anymore.

  • There are tough choices to be made.

If you're married and others depend on you for their subsistence then you could discuss this with your priest.

If finding other employment is possible, then take a good look at your options.

  • I hate to say this, but the working every other week end is not just with factory workers but also with hospital staff.  My family have been told to work every other week end if not, you are out.  Reviews are telling their workers/staff that there is down sizing and that means less workers and those workers are to take on more more work or else.  It is not going to get better, only worse.  The enemy knows what they are doing.  Our family (3 members) were told just this and if they did not take a flu shot then their action is voluntary resignation.  So, they too can only go to Mass every other week.  My husband keeps his Sunday Holy by following the Mass with his missal and DVD of the Mass and he says a rosary before he goes to sleep in order to work the night shift.  He was able to go to Mass and work that shift when he was younger, but he can no longer.

As for the flu shot, the docuмent, ordering it, mandatory, stated religious exemption and such. ( because the state has it on the books) BUT they industry has found that pushing a job to the limit, makes your workers do it.  It actually comes down to- God or job.

    Very sad.

  • You could go to  vigil Mass on  a Saturday.

    If you're novus ordo, yes.

If you take Catholic Tradition seriously, then it raises some concerns.
