  • Sounds like a bunch of feelings oriented women bragging about having special favors.

If any of you were for real obseesed by a demon, you'd have a heart attack.
St Teresa of Avila was not a feelings oriented woman who liked to brag about special favors. What she wrote she wrote under obedience.

Exactly what I'm talking about, people comparing themselves to rare saints.

  • This is something I heard about. A priest in a neighboring parish was called to a house where there were possible diabolic manifestations. He read from a book and prayed and the manifestations continued. He returned, brought holy water and his ritual and prayed from it in Latin. The manifestations continued. He called his uncle (the official exorcist of the country of his origin. His uncle said, "Have them pray the rosary." He did an that was the end of the diabolic manifestations.

  • I can't say I have experienced the tangible presence of the devil, that's a pretty strong assertion. But I have felt "evil" in a more general, intangible way. It seems normal to me that many would. It's a pervading presence in the world, how could we not?

I think most people in the world become desensitized to evil influences, be they actual demons or just evil people or objects. They can become desensitized and not notice them, or even further, they can outright favor those evil influences.

But that also means that people in the state of grace (or at least striving for it) are more sensitive to and repulsed by evil influences and recognize them for what they are. Probably the closer one gets to God and sanctity, the more aware they become of the presence of His enemies and the more they are able to discern the spirits. I think that is a very normal spiritual development and it is not quite the same thing as the far advanced trials that some saints undergo in actually facing off with demons. Not that there are no saints of that caliber out there now, I am sure there must be a few, but I think what most of us can describe is just a basic awareness of evil influences nearby. We probably don't always know exactly what or why, but there's an underlying wariness.

It could come with a side of temptation to pride, but why wouldn't it? Everything does. Have you ever tried to do good and NOT had the devil tempt you to pride over it? Lucky you, if so. I can't do anything without that struggle hanging over me, and I am pretty sure I am not alone in that. But that is a side issue and does not necessarily mean that the initial sense of an evil influence is wrong. I would not think these are things we should go out looking for but if it happens, pay attention.

i thought the rosary was always used in exorcisms anyway?

  • I went to visit my niece, in TX.  Her father-in-law invited a friend of his. He came at the meal. (background:  The father-in-law was of no religion, had all his monies into stocks, wall street.  When I saw it I said, oh, you must know where to put your $ to make money.  War and abortion are the #2 ones.  And he did not like my comment)  So, the friend comes over to the lunch meal, which was 2 hours later from my arrival. So, this friend of father-in-law, a man starts a conversation about his sect and a woman with powers to heal and such.  I just listen and he smiled to me and he said, what do you think of that!  I was asking the Holy Ghost to help me and I asked, " very amazing, the powers that you mention, how do they come about?"  He answered, "Well, the Holy Spirit, of course!"  I remembered how the devils hated the Precious Blood of Christ at His death. So, I asked, what about the powers of the Precious Blood of Christ?"  This man screamed, I kid you not, screamed out, "What of it!"  I was startled, but there was no doubt in my mind, that this man harbored the devil.  I also am of the opinion that this man was embarrassed. That is, he did not expect that to come out of him.  You know, like when your body says it feels like vomiting and it takes you by surprise.

Well, I got up from the table and said, "I did not come for this", and left to another room.  I felt that this man was set-up for me by father-in-law.  My niece and her husband spoke with me later and I told them that I was ok, and that I think I knew what happened.  That was an eye opener.

I think it would be good for all of us to have an "eye opener" to remind us that there are demons and they are furious.  The lions who devour!!

  • Yes, I am familiar with those outbursts and other un-Christlike behaviors from those calling themselves Christian. Sadly from those who call themselves Catholic also when you remind them of the ancient faith they have discarded.

  • Interesting story, Songbird. I've known a few evangelical Protestants who would rave about Jesus, yet if Our Lady were ever mentioned, a look of disgust and hate would come out of them.
