Has your CathInfo e-mail changed over the years?

  • Someone wrote to me today and told me that her e-mail address has changed since she first signed up on CathInfo.
In other words, the e-mail address CathInfo has for her account is invalid!

    Which means several things:
    * You won't receive any password reset e-mails
    * No notifications that you got a private message from somebody
    * No notifications that someone posted to a thread you subscribed to
    * If you have "receive e-mails from other members" set to YES, people still won't be able to send you an email
    * Build up of yet another bounced message on my server every time CI tries to send you one of these e-mails

NOTE: The e-mail system on CathInfo doesn't expose your e-mail address to anyone. All e-mails are sent THROUGH CathInfo. So you give me your valid e-mail address, the world at large can click "Send e-mail to John" and then CathInfo sends the message to John -- the world never sees your e-mail address.  This is a precaution to prevent people from harassing you, harvesting your e-mail address, etc.

So today I'd like to say: Anyone who has a better/newer/valid e-mail address, please update your CathInfo account. You can do this yourself!

Go to the Profile menu --> Account Settings
    About halfway down,  you'll see

    Email
This must be a valid email address.

Just fill in your new e-mail address, and you're all set!
    Want to say "thank you"?

  • Thanks for the notice Matthew.  I could see that I had to register my new email address on CathInfo which I just did.

  • I should also point out:

Certain e-mail domains reject all e-mails from my server, because my server isn't "big time" enough.

    These domains include:

    att.net
    comcast.net
    hotmail.com
    yahoo.com
    live.com
    lycos.com
    gmx.com
    zoomtown.com

Please try (if possible) to use an e-mail address NOT from this list.

I'd rather not bore you with the technical details, but suffice to say it's not something I can fix. To fix this, I would have to have the cooperation of my Internet service provider, who I already spoke with.

After going back-and-forth with them for weeks, eventually the Admin concluded that what I was asking for could only be granted if I switched to a business plan -- which would cost about 3-4x as much, if not more.

Gmail accounts work great -- for now at least.

It's harder to make a list of which domains work -- the once which don't work end up clogging up the e-mail queue ("bounced") so I can browse through them. That's how I created the above list!

I'd like to know the techinical details, if you don't mind.
This is interesting because it has big implications for anyone setting up their own small home server right?
