  • Happy St. Crispin's Day!  Ss. Crispin and Crispinian were Roman brothers who went to Gaul as missionaries and were martyred, though their names are better known for being the subject of King Henry V's Agincourt speech in Shakespeare's Henry V.

    I think it's pretty topical, so tradblogs is running a brief feature on St Crispin's Day.  Here's a link: http://tradblogs.blogspot.com/2013/10/a-happy-and-blessed-st-crispins-day.html

    Happy St. Crispin's Day!
    "Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

  • I like the antiphon and collect for Mass for these saints:

    "In Heaven rejoice the souls of the saints, who followed the footsteps of Christ: and because of His love they shed their blood, therefore with Christ they shall reign forever."

    "Almighy and everlasting God, grant us worthily to venerate thy holy Martyrs, Crispin and Crispinian, so that we may be delivered from the dangers of the world, and may be worthy of eternal joy."

    Since these saints are commemorted only in the Sarum Use, do you know if the Sarum Use is still celebrated anywhere in the world? I didn't see on the linked website that it's still used.

    "It is licit to resist a Sovereign Pontiff who is trying to destroy the Church. I say it is licit to resist him in not following his orders and in preventing the execution of his will. It is not licit to Judge him, to punish him, or to depose him, for these are acts proper to a superior."

    ~St. Robert Bellarmine
    De Romano Pontifice, Lib.II, c.29

  •             That he which hath no stomach to this fight,
                    Let him depart; his passport shall be made,
                    And crowns for convoy put into his purse;
                    We would not die in that man's company
                    That fears his fellowship to die with us.
                    This day is call'd the feast of Crispian.
                    He that outlives this day, and comes safe home,
                    Will stand a tip-toe when this day is nam'd,
                    And rouse him at the name of Crispian.
                    He that shall live this day, and see old age,
                    Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours,
                    And say 'To-morrow is Saint Crispian.'
                    Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars,
                    And say 'These wounds I had on Crispian's day.'
                    Old men forget; yet all shall be forgot,
                    But he'll remember, with advantages,
                    What feats he did that day. Then shall our names,
                    Familiar in his mouth as household words-
                    Harry the King, Bedford and Exeter,
                    Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester-
                    Be in their flowing cups freshly rememb'red.
                    This story shall the good man teach his son;
                    And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
                    From this day to the ending of the world,
                    But we in it shall be remembered-
                    We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
                    For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
                    Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
                    This day shall gentle his condition;
                    And gentlemen in England now-a-bed
                    Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here,
                    And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
                    That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.
