Cannot see a Total Recall terraforming at all, but do wonder still if dommed cities, etc could exist......would need still some sort of water or, relying fully on Earth for water and O2, etc....

Could they?  It's possible.  Mars is 0.38g, so they would still have to solve the problem of bone loss due to reduced gravity.  I don't believe that Earth could support that degree of freshwater loss, even if transporting it was feasible.  If such transportation were possible, it would probably be a better idea to mine Europa for water.

  • True, remind me, Europa is mainly Ice? mix?

yeah, the gravity thing would be difficult, I recall a lot of discussion on the Books Red/Green/Blue Mars that came out some yrs ago.

The only thing about the book I really disliked was the sex and irreligion of the characters, but it was a good discussion of what settling Mars might be like, esp with response to multi-national companies exploiting.......

again, if reading, though, bear in mind there is at times some rather raunchy sex noted.....and some IVF/eugenics (one faction takes eggs and sperm and grows test tube babies)

But the progression of science and settling, etc is rather good......

Well, the surface entirely covered in ice, though it's obviously not pure.  Before we could properly evaluate spectra, it was believed that it was a combination of water and carbonate or sulfate salts, though better understanding of surface temperature precludes that.  There are varying theories now, with a fair amount of support for a combination of water, hydronium and hydrogen peroxide.

As with the rest of the Jovian satellites, it's a rocky body in the interior, probably with a mantle of silicates and a non-convective iron core.
