Caraffa is correct in stating that face-to-face confessions are practiced by Eastern Catholics. I went to confession in a Byzantine Catholic church once and it was face-to-face. I didn't so much mind that the priest saw who I was (since I only had a long list of venial sins to confess) but what really bothered me was the fact that I was worried about being overheard by other parishioners. I said my confession standing up near the sanctuary as the priest was standing beside me. There was a person sitting in one of the pews and even when I whispered my confession, I believe he might have heard since it was a small church. A very uncomfortable situation.
