  • This month's QST put out by ARRL reviews the IC-9700.  QST reviews are generally straight-shooting, and this one has nothing but praise for this radio.

May have to divert some from the 2020 gun-fund to the 2020 radio-fund for this radio.

I let my subscription lapse. Can you post any salient excerpts from the article?

I am conflicted about the 9700. Undoubtably it is a great radio, but it can't even be modified to receive, much less transmit, out of the ham bands. No aviation, marine, .gov, GMRS, .mil bands even to receive.  Tentatively then I will wait for the 705.  It's QRP, but can certainly be amplified.

And then there is Elecraft :)

It would appear that you're not alone.  Some reviewer comments at DXEngineering...

I was really looking forward to this radio and I hoped it would be a real game changer and a step up from my 910 or 9100 but sadly Icom has dropped the ball. The good things, small, low power consumption in receive, beautiful touch screen display, the spectrum scope, good sensitivity, many options for pwr levels and tone control, dstar built in, 23cm built in. The Bad,looks like 9600 packet support has been dropped so no falconsat-3 reception or other pacsats ,and it drifts every time the fan comes on which is every time you transmit for a bit, not bad enough to effect voice except maybe on 23cm in SSB but WSPR and JT65B are out of the question or will be very marginal depending which band you are on, the 10Mhz ref port input on the back that everyone including myself thought was going to be a ref lock is just used for calibration. So the casual SSB,FM,D-star users will be happy with this radio, but the digital satellite, EME, weak signal folks will be less than happy with this new radio and for now should probably stick to their current setup.

Peter from NC (2 out of 5 stars):

All that I posted below is accurate in every way. However, for digital work this radio is not a good option at all. Frequency stability is poor as the fan cycles. Further, and this is for me a show stopper, you can't do 9600 baud thus, all the satellite digital stuff is now off the table. If you have a radio that will operate with 9600 baud FT8 or any of the digital modes, either keep it and use this one for SSB CW where it shines, or don't change radio's yet.

There are several other 5 out of 5 star reviews, but it would appear from the above that the 9700 does have a few shortcomings.  That being said, for my uses, I don't think any of the detractions identified above would have any impact on me.

Do you know if the 7300 can do any of these?  For the time being, that's what I have my eye on if I do not go with the 9700.

The 7300 is easily jail-broken, but is only HF + 6m.

  • Recent vid showing the differing capabilities between CB and GMRS radio.  First half is installation, whereas second half is the comparison.
