  • I have a two part question and they may seem childish but it is just something I have always wondered.

    1) Do you believe your gut intuition is solely divinely inspired?

I have a strong gut intuition.  I have "felt" my grandmother's passing the evening she died and I also knew the day my child would be born and that I also conceived.  Both my mother and I also knew that I would get in a car accident on the day I did.

2)How good are your "vibes" about people? What do you think that means?

I have this one person in my life for about 15 years and from day 1 I have a bad vibe. Over the years I have learned that they are in a state of deep mortal sin and I don't know if that is what I feel hanging over them but when I am with them I can feel the hairs on my neck stand up. Do you think "vibes" mean anything? Does it mean this person needs prayers?

  • No, I really don't.

I have experienced signs, things that others could attest to, that I think mean something. For example my mom's perfectly healthy puppy passed suddenly on 31 Dec sometime after 3:30pm, and my mom passed a few days later, 2 Jan, at 3:45. When the pup passed (it was playing one moment, then seizing a bit, then we walked it around trying to find a vet on a weekend, but he passed in minutes — a quite horrifying moment), it occurred to us (and many) that it was a sign. It was a strong enough sign that people drove from out-of-state to be with Mom; people were able to get a wonderful ("underground" trad) priest there before Mom passed. It was an actual odd enough sign that it got people where they needed to be. That sort of thing, I've experienced, but it seems to come from God/Heaven/Guardian Angel.

But my instincts just aren't really holy. Oh, real bad guys I can usually avoid with ease, but I've been a bit judgey when I really shouldn't have been, and I've been trusting and patient when I definitely shouldn't have been, so I've tried to train myself to trust evidence, and not my feelings. That's just me, though. :)

I've had the experience of thinking about people and hearing later they died soon after.  I suppose it would be chalked up to coincidence but it certainly doesn't seem like it.

  • I have what I would term comparative intuition.  In real life, I observe the way people react, the questions they ask, they way they ask their questions or respond to my questions, their general demeanour and I compare it to similar people in similar situations, more subconsciously than consciously, but a first meeting with a new people often reminds me of traits of people I have met previously and i think what the outome was.

People turning up at your home for example to buy a car, or negotiating terms in a contract, or stalling over payment of an invoice or making a counter-proposal. They are sort of behavioural fingerprints and they are pretty reliably predictive; in certain situations.

Over time as you build a database of experiences with interacting with strangers you get much, much better at second guessing what people are going to do next.  You could call it being able to "read people" perhaps.

  • Guts have feelings and instincts.  Intuition involves a brain.

    Just saying.

  • A good book for those interested in this is Occult Phenomena by Abbot Alois Wiesinger, O.C.S.O., originally published in 1956 in German, it's since been translated into English. The Abbot's general idea is that, before the Fall, Adam & Eve possessed certain attributes proper to a pure spirit, the intuitive knowledge & communication & ability to act on matter which the angels have, & that these powers were for the most part lost as a result of the Fall, but that there are vestigial remnants, stronger in some people than others, & that these powers of the soul can often become still stronger in those who are weakened by disease or injuries, or even severe fasting, because under these circuмstances the soul is already to a certain degree free of the encuмbrance of the body & can more easily act after the manner of a pure spirit. This would explain some instances of things such as telepathy, telekinesis &c. It's a fascinating book, really the only one of its kind that I've yet found.

  •  :rahrah:
Women have it, men, rarely. ?
As a child, I "knew" when our phone rang, that our Aunt Loretta had died of a heart attack at age 36.  I also "knew" that a neighbor lady was pregnant...before she knew it!  Sometimes I "recognize" places I've never been before, to the point of point of being able to give directions and graphic descriptions
.  Both my mother and I have had dreams in advance of places we'd go for the first time.  My sister "knew" the birthdays of her two sons.  In both cases, the doctors were wrong.  I agree with Zeitun that our angels have a part in the unexplained.  I think priests may have this if they are especially holy. Saints Padre Pio and St. John Vianney often knew events by other than natural means.  Once, an sspx priest told me details of a sin I'd forgotten.  There was no natural means of him knowing anything about it.  I'd never told anyone about the incident, ever.  The priest told me the three persons involved by name, also, the location where I sinned. The priest knew the exact sum of money acquired by dishonest means.  When I looked into the matter further, it turned out the priest was two years old and living on a different continent when I committed the sin.  Twins are often able to communicate to one another.
     :furtive:
St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.

It was published in English in 1957 by Burns & Oates as Occult Phenomena in the Light of Theology and was reprinted by Roman Catholic Books recently.

I highly recommend this book. It is the best work that explains preternatural phenomena and it is solidly based on scholastic philosophy and theology.

  • I was working on Thursday finalising stuff for my trip and ran inside the house from my office in the garden.  Most likely reason was to go to the toilet, second most likely reason was to make a cup of tea.  My wife was standing by the patio door with my passport, the exact reason I had run inside because I needed it for an online checkin.

She does stuff like that ALL the time.  No idea how she knows.

The devil has gotten to many religious people through their pride and curiosity. I have know many self proclaimed "mini-seers" in my life, people with a "direct phone to God".

Always remember: Be careful with your pride. You are a nobody, you are not worthy to be special gifted person able to understand and receive messages from beyond, whether from God or any of his creations. Forget the coincidences in your life that "sound", "feel" like you are seeing the future.

  • Frances,

Although I think that women have oracular intuitions more frequently than men (in the middle ages this was attributed to their having more "porous" souls, that is, souls more open to external influence), I think a big chunk of the claims women make are attributable to selective memory and general irrationality.

When a phone rings, a woman might have any number of thoughts or feelings, including a vague dread.

It turns out her relative has died. The dread is singled out and amplified, given a concrete significance, while the many other thoughts and feelings are forgotten. Later, in telling the story, the woman says (and believes) that she "knew" precisely what the call was about before she picked it up.

I am wary of these claims, because I've witnessed this process play out transparently. I think most people making these claims should mistrust their memories, rather than relate them as gospel.

I'm not talking about where a woman takes one glance at a friend and knows there's something up. That happens constantly. Women are without a doubt more attuned to peoples' emotional states, especially people they know, and so long as there is direct sense knowledge (and not just a phone ring or a fleeting thought), the information gleaned from which is not claimed to be strict and precise but only vague and general, I have no particular reason to doubt it.

Speaking of emotional tuning, Frances, I met a young woman this summer who seemed specially attuned to me. She would mirror my emotional states, only boosting the volume several notches, so to speak, slightly dramatizing my typically muted emotions. (Sorry for the mixed metaphor.) A few times it seemed like she was a personification of my internal forum. On top of liking her for herself, I learned a fair bit about myself just by being around her. I guess that's a wordy way of saying she was very sympathetic.

The point is, if women occasionally claiming they have psychic intuitions is part of the collateral for their ability to be so warm and sympathetic, I can live with it.

    I concur with bowler here.

It is very dangerous to fall into delusions that one is somehow gifted with preternatural gifts as it may lead to spiritual pride, vainglory and ultimately to tepidity and acedia.

Whatsoever leads one to prayerful self-abnegation, interior mortification (as well as exterior), self-detachment, humility, &c., is usually the best option to take. Dwelling upon curiosities regarding the preternatural does not lead to such things, rather, as the experience of many has shown, leads to the opposite.

Also, such curiosity takes away from what should always be our focus: the truly supernatural nature of grace and how one's interior life should be worthy thereof. One single act of sanctifying grace is worth more than the entire created universe together, because sanctifying grace makes us participate in the very life of God by making us dwellings of the Holy Trinity, making us infused with the theological virtues of faith, hope and charity, and making us able to operate under the gifts of the Holy Ghost. This is far more wonderful than anything you can ever imagine or conceive in the created world.

Another truly supernatural miracle: Holy Mass and the Blessed Sacrament. To have God Himself there, that is truly the most amazing thing of which that no one person ever dared to dream. It took a Divine Person, Our Lord Himself, to reveal it and when He did, most deserted Him and throughout the ages heretics and apostates still attack this central Mystery of the Catholic faith.
Please ignore all that I have written regarding sedevacantism.

  • I am not a very intuitive person at all.  I tend to be fairly logical about things like that.  I can read livestock extremely well but that has little to do with intuition and a lot to do with experience and very acute observational skills.  It's almost impossible for me to read emotions in women (and I am a woman).  With men I can do a lot better but it took a fair bit of time to develop that.

The only times I've ever remembered having such experiences is dealing with my sheep in the middle of the night.  I'd occasionally wake up suddenly from a sound sleep with this urgent feeling to check on them.  When I go out there with a flashlight, I see some tragedy to avert- a breech delivery (saved a lamb from drowning in utero), a ram cast on a hill so he can't get up (he'd have bloated and died if I didn't get him back on his feet).  Deo gratias that I woke up at the exact moment to rescue them, but I can't think that this is any special sixth sense.  I've had the same urgent feeling and awakened only to find all is well out at the barn.  I'm sure it's just me worrying in my sleep, and it's bound to happen that a problem will occur simultaneously at some point.  This is a very common phenomenon amongst shepherds that I've spoken to, so it seems that we are just a worried lot.  In lambing season it's practically guaranteed.
The good shepherd giveth his life for his sheep.  But the hireling, and he that is not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and flieth, and the wolf catcheth, and scattereth the sheep.  A
