  • As some of you know, I played guitar in a past life. I've since sold all my musical equipment, and stopped listening to secular music completely. Its done a world of difference, and I'm glad I have.

However, I still have a bit of a yearning to play music, and I cant imagine the guitar and music it creates is, intrinsically, not good; that there could not be a good type of music created from it. So, then, could anyone suggest what I could learn that would not have a harmful effect? Would it be folk style (if so could you list songs that I could listen to to get an idea of what that is?), spanish style, blues, etc? I'm not really into jazz (though blues I am, even though they are cousins). Thanks!

  • Baroque. Herein is the perfection of Western music.

Silvius Leopold Weiss wrote for the lute.

    http://slweiss.com/

It was intended for the lute but most can be played on the guitar after some minor editing.

Some of his works you can look up on Youtube: Chaconne g minor, Chaconne G major, allemande f-sharp minor, Tombeau pour M. Cajetan, etc

  • Hey Graham- I was thinking classical too (hence the Spanish variant, since I find it more appealing)....

Not too familiar with bluegrass but I will look into that too, thanks Herbert

  • s2srea dont you like it when the fingers form calluses?

sometimes i tap my fingers on linoleum or other smooth non permeable surface and instead of smooshing againt the linoleum they will spring back. this is because the skin has been callused and i think it is neat.

  • To me, guitars are like guns--perhaps a bit dangerous,
but there's no such thing as  a bad guitar or a bad gun.

We are all called to be saints, but unless we have a vocation, we don't lead the same life in the secular world. There are claims around that the beat of the music is  in itself satanic, but I'd like better proof of this.

I've played for forty years and I don't feel bound for Hell for that particular reason.

The Christmas carol O Holy Night was  composed on a guitar by a guitarist.

  • I play guitar, and write lyrics. I wrote this in 2008. I need to put music to it, probably a Bluegrass feel.

    The Greatest Love Of All

    daddy, he made sure
we’d be in church on time
and when mamma read her bible
    she’d always wear a smile
    and grandma prayed for grandpa
‘cause he stayed drunk on wine
when she sang him rock of ages
he’d bow his head and cry

    (chorus)
    some day, those clouds
will part by the golden light
    my angel ,who guards me
will hold me while we fly
    on that day, Blessed Peter
will take me from her arms
    and deliver me for judgment
‘fore the greatest Love of all

    (verse 2)
    time's trials and it’s troubles
    have finally come my way
    my dear and precious family
have left me here in pain
but my cross I shall carry
    ‘cause daddy ‘d always say
don’t you worry ’bout your mamma
you’ll be joining her some day

    (chorus)
    yes some day, those clouds
will part by the golden light
    my angel ,who guards me
will hold me while we fly
    on that day, Blessed Peter
will take me from her arms
    and deliver me for judgment
‘fore the greatest Love of all

    (bridge)
    how about you my friend
were you raised on the word of the Lord ?
turn your back to the fire, John’s water’s just fine
can you hear Him holler all aboard ?

    (chorus 2)
    yes some day, those clouds
will part by the golden light
    our angels ,who guard us
will hold us while we fly
    on that day, Blessed Peter
will take us from their arms
    and deliver us for judgment
‘fore the greatest Love of all

    (tag)
yes I’m ready for my judgment
‘fore the greatest Love of all

As Lighthouse said, we all can't be monks.

  • I don't think it is  the style of music so much as the lyrical content.  Make sure it is moral and you'll be fine.
Stir up within Thy Church, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the Spirit with which blessed Josaphat, Thy Martyr and Bishop, was filled, when he laid down his life for his sheep: so that, through his intercession, we too may be moved and strengthen by the same Spir

Well, I'm not sure that's exactly what I had in mind. At very least you should make it so that it's undeniably Catholic.
