  • I realize I never announced any rule on this, because it wasn't a problem until now.

But someone could treat CathInfo like their own personal blog/magazine, of which THEY are the editor -- they get to decide what hundreds of members are going to see today.

    I DON'T THINK SO.

You can post as much as you like, but you see, one is normally limited by TIME and ABILITY TO COMPOSE that much coherent text. Eventually your mind gets tired, or you need to be elsewhere. That prevents the forum from being TAKEN OVER by one or two individuals.

But if you could post empty content -- cut & paste, the word "bump" and such -- you could strategically put whatever topic you want on the front page, burying EVERYTHING ELSE and making the forum essentially unusable.

So getting to the point -- excessive bumping will be met by TEMPORARY BANS and removal of many/most of the bumps in question.

What is excessive? Try me. If you think it might be considered excessive, then DON'T DO IT. I get to decide what is excessive. That should keep everyone well behaved.

"Bumping" old threads should be RARE and FOR A GOOD REASON each and every time. The chance of you happening to have a "good reason" for 7 threads within an hour? Dubious. Real dubious.

"Rules", "Well behaved" -- yes, it sounds like an elementary school, doesn't it? That's not a coincidence. It's how moderating this forum feels to me sometimes.

  • And no, bumping a bunch of stuff to scroll off Marijuana threads is not legitimate.

As I said: I'm not removing/censoring/putting such threads in a ghetto because APPARENTLY PLENTY OF PEOPLE LOOK FORWARD TO PARTICIPATING IN THEM.

If someone posted 5 MJ threads and they only got 1-2 responses each, I would probably ban the user who started the 5 threads for spamming. But that's not what I'm seeing.

Long story short, YOU don't get to decide what the whole CI membership sees on the front page.

Again, let me summarize. There are only 2 possibilities:
    1. No one wants MJ threads. Ignore them, and they'll go away (possibly with help from my ban hammer, if spamming happens)
    2. People DO want MJ threads. In which case, it's not up to you to scroll them off the front page. You have to have patience, because many of your fellow CI members LOVE those threads.

Either way, this is not your forum, and not yours to control or decide.

All I can suggest is: BE the change you want to see in the world on the forum. Start legitimate topics, post legitimate content. But don't act like you can single-handedly purge the front page of a topic YOU PERSONALLY happen to find annoying. That is not your place.

  • The bumping got tiresome, especially when it happened to threads that were 10+ years old. Thanks for your efforts!

  • Make mental note:  Bumping too many edifying old Lenten-topic threads during Lent is a no-no.   Got it.

You can't fool me. Especially when you admit publicly why you were doing it. (To scroll off the MJ threads). And I'm not stupid at any rate; I didn't even need your admission.

You can pretend Lenten piety all you want. The fact is, YOU were trying to have an above average effect, punching above your weight class, on what CathInfo members will see today. That has now been officially forbidden. Note: I have warned the entire forum, NOT JUST YOU.

If I allow Mr. B from A to scroll off MJ threads, because he personally doesn't like them, then maybe some (((Red Sea Pedestrian))) will want to scroll off Mark79's threads tomorrow. Not to mention, those who DO like MJ threads might come out in force bumping their threads all back to the top. I'll be spending dozens of minutes a day deleting fluffy "bump" posts. I don't think so. I've got too much going on in my life to waste my time in that way.

  • Good call. I've seen too many of these narcissists constantly bumping their own threads with a bunch of gobbledygook to keep them selves relevant. Not only here, but a some other forums that I might scan through once in a while and the same idiot with no life constantly on the computer bumping his own garbage. It becomes quite annoying and they WILL co-opt your forum if you don't take control of their nonsense.

  • Makes sense, Matthew!  We appreciate your efforts to keep things from getting taken over by one or two people here!

Of course I see this and being a melancholic wonder...  Have I done this?

Sorry; everyone here on CathInfo knows what a troublemaker I am, always trying to dominate the forum with my excessive thread-bumping.  Especially egregious was bumping a total of four Lenten threads during Lent in a short space of time.  I have tried hard to behave myself since this thread.

I was actually thinking of other people in the past...

I must admit that I am not familiar with your posting as much.  But, I don't get on as much now that we have children.  😅

With a score of >1 post in 4 days I hardly think so. Besides Lent gets bumped every year!

    ;) :cowboy:
Patience is a conquering virtue. The learned say that, if it not desert you, It vanquishes what force can never reach; Why answer back at every angry speech? No, learn forbearance or, I'll tell you what, You will be taught it, whether you will or not.
