  • My grandmother is in the hospital - they put her on a ventilator (a breathing tube down her throat) because she was having problems breathing. I called for a priest and he gave her anointing of the sick. I think this could be near the end for her since her heart has weakened considerably.

Please pray that she get better and is able to get off the breathing machine and go home.

    Thank you in advance.

  • Thank you everyone who prayed for Granny. Good news. She only has a little bit of the pneumonia left. The doctor wanted to take out the breathing tube today (since she passed the breathing on her own test) but she was too sedated and he will wait until tomorrow when he returns. Thanks be to the Holy Face of Jesus, to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and to St. Rita. Please continue to pray for her healing.

Yeah, I'm glad to hear that Alex! I'll still continue to pray for her.

  • They have still not taken Granny off the ventilator even though she is able to breath on her own and has been ready to get off it for 2 days now. I believe they are playing games to keep her on it longer so that she can stay longer in the hospital. The hosptial makes $1000 a day for each patient, so the longer a patient stays the more money the hospital makes. The nurse lied to me about having given Granny morphine - she said they did not give her any since yesterday morning but I found out from the nurse that took over her shift that they had given her morphine at 1 AM. I caught this same nurse doing something to Granny's breathing tube and then Granny had a few seconds of no breathing soon after and the nurse decided to put her back on the ventilator. And then the doctor is using the excuse that he doesn't want to take Granny off the ventilator until he sees Granny alert. But if Granny is drugged out, she can't be alert. I told him she was alert before they gave her the morphine but he says he needs to see it himself. So this morning Granny opened her eyes to me and she nodded at me but then went back to sleep. The doc says she is not alert enough, but I told him that Granny is always like this in the morning. But, even though she proved herself alert before the morphine and even though I told him she is always half awake until around 1 PM, he tells me that she is not alert enough to take her off the ventilator.

The two other times Granny was at this hosptial they tried to do unnecessary tests or tried to keep her at the hospital even though she was well enought to go home. This time when Granny came to the ER, they kicked me out for 40 minutes and were doing exrays and tests on her without first consulting me. I don't know what they were doing to her for those 40 minutes but they had no right to kick me out like that. She has dementia and doesn't speak English and I as her family member and caretaker should have been there to protect her rights.

And shall I even go into how hygiene protocols are not even followed there by the nurses. Granny had a loose bowel movment and the nurse wiped her with the wipes and then, with the same gloves she soiled wiping her behind, she grabbed Granny's pillow and placed it under her head and then used the same soiled gloves to handle the IV tubes and breating aparatus Granny is attached to. I couldn't say anthing about her spreading poo particles on the bed sheets, pillow, and instruments becuase in the Critical Care Unit, the nurse has a right to kick you out for any reason - so if I had complained they would have kicked me out every time they cleaned Granny.

And all the nurses and doctors contaminate the gloves before they put them on. They grab onto the gloves with their entire palm and so, if they have any germs on their hands from other patients or are sick, the gloves are no longer sterile. You are supposed to wash your hands before grabbing the gloves and, even then, you are not supposed to touch all over the fingers of the gloves but use your thumb and pointer finger to grab the glove from the top.

Anyway, I'm just rambling because I'm very upset over fact that the hospital is using tactics to keep Granny there longer and over the fact that Granny is always put at risk for infection becuase the nurses and doctors aren't following proper hygiene protocol and get mad at you when you try to correct them.

Please continue to pray for Granny that she may be taken off the ventilator and that she not catch anything at the hospital like she did the last time she was there (when she developed a cough that lasted for 1 month after staying in the hospital for 2 days which ended up giving her pneumonia).

  •   Continued prayers for Granny.

Don't be too concerned about them possibly keeping Granny there to make money off of her. The average patient is not a major profit center for a hospital. If the patient has private insurance, the hospital probably stands to make a bit and if the patient is covered by the gov't, they might very well be losing money every day the patient is there. Hospitals make their money on things like short-stay procedures and radiology.

  • Please continue to keep Granny in your prayers. Good news is that she was taken off the ventilator and is breathing on her own. Bad news is that she caught the MRSA (staph) virus from her last stay at the hospital 3 months ago (no doubt do to the poor hygiene habits that I witnessed by all the nurses and doctors). MRSA is resistant to a lot of antibiotics and is hard to get rid of. This is what caused her current pneumonia and why she is in the hospital now. Please pray that she is able to fight it off. Another bad news is that she is so weak that she is is always sleeping and so they can't remove the feeding tube from her nose because she is too weak to sit up and eat. Please pray that she may get stronger so that they do not leave the feeding tube in her permanantly and she will be permanantly bedridden and be sent to a nursing home. Nursing home staff are even less hygenic than the nurses at the hospital and so she will most likely get another infection and die suffering there.
