  • I must admit I love a good saying or proverb and I was just wondering of anyone else would like to share their favorites.

I'll start with a few of mine:

    - A closed mouth gathers no foot!

    - Profanity is the Art of Making Ignorance Audible.

    - Tolerance is the virtue of the man without convictions.
    G.K. Chesterton

    - "Not to oppose erroneous doctrine is to approve of it, and not to defend all true doctrine is to suppress it." - Innocent III

    - All that is neccesary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.

    - Abortion is to medicine what prostitution is to romance!

    - "To one who has Faith, no explanation is necessary. To one without Faith, no explanation is possible." St. Thomas Aquinas

    - If guns are responsible for crime then your pen is responsible for your spelling mistakes.

    - Just going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than standing in your garage makes you a car.-- G.K. Chesterton

    - Today's conservative's were yesterday's modernists.

    - "We Catholics lose ground perhaps more on account of the truths that good men have not the courage to proclaim than because of the errors that the wicked have been cunning enough to multiply." Louis Veuillot

    - 'A woman in the presence of a good man, a real man, loves being a woman. His pursuit draws out her beauty. And a man in the presence of a real woman, loves being a man. Her beauty arouses him to play the man; it draws out his strenghth. She inspires him to be a hero.' - Stasi Eldredge

And now its your turn.......... :geezer:

  • My father told me this, when we had relatives over from out of state once, and I was feeling a little annoyed (don't remember why):

"Fish and visitors begin to smell after three days."

  • Since I spent an entire semester listening to a seminar on Socrates it is only fitting that I provide his most famous quote.

"I am the wisest man in the world; for I know one thing, and that is that I know nothing." ~Socrates

And on a more humorous note....

"By all means marry; if you get a good wife, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher" ~ Also by Socrates.

In regards to being a responsible man, would it be interesting to learn, after six years of accuмulating all the wisdom you could, that you had it right all alon

  • Nemo dat quod non habet.
No one gives what he doesn't have.

    Timeo Danaos et dona ferentes.
I fear Greeks even when they bear gifts.

    Principiis obsta
    Resist the beginnings.

Not only for every idle word, but for every idle silence shall we be called to account.
    St. Ambrose of Milan (340-397AD)

    cuм negante principia nequit disputar
"It is impossible to discuss with anyone who denies principles"

Saint Thomas Aquinas said once and for all: "Let the knowledgeable man teach. Let the holy man pray. Let the prudent man rule."

    Ab inimice disce
    Learn from your enemy

Bonum est ex integra causa, malum ex quocuмque defectu
A good thing must be completely so, evil if it has any defect.

"Speaking the truth in times of universal deceit is a revolutionary act." -George Orwell

  • Most of these are wise sayings that I have heard and there are a few new ones.  I don't know who said these first, but here are my contributions:

Not to decide is to decide.  (So much for claiming to be taking the "prudent course".)

There are two kinds of people in the world; those who divide things into two groups and those who don't.

    and, its corollary,

There are ten kinds of people in the world; those who understand binary numbers and those who don't.

  • "We need to teach our daughters to distinguish between a man who flatters her, and a man who compliments her.
A man who spends money on her, and a man who invests in her.
A man who views her as property, and a man who views her properly.
A man who lusts after her, and a man who loves her.
A man who believes he is God's gift to women, and a man who remembers a woman was God's gift to man.
... And then teach our boys to be that kind of a man."

  • The english translation is mine, so it can be not very good. I apologize.

    - Expergiscere, homo: quia pro te Deus factus est homo. (St. Augustine)
Wake up man, because God for you became man.

    - Chi prega certamente si salva, chi non prega certamente si danna. (Sant’Alfonso)
Those who pray are certainly saved, those who do not pray are certainly damned. (St. Alphonsus)

    - Tradizione non vuol dire che i vivi sono morti, ma che i morti sono vivi. (G.K. Chesterton)
Tradition does not mean that the living are dead, but that the dead are alive.

  • You can learn something from the dumbest person in the world - if you learn not to be that dumb, you learned something.
"But Peter and the apostles answering, said: We ought to obey God, rather than men." - Acts 5:29

The Highest Principle in the Church: "We are first of all under obedience to God, and only then under obedience to man" - Fr. Hesse

  • Of course, there's the proverb that all school teachers used to tell us at the beginning of every school year:

There's no such thing as a stupid question, just stupid people who ask questions.

Is this supposed to be a joke? I don't get it.
