  • (CNN) -- The outrage came hard and fast after a 3-year-old girl badly scarred and wearing an eye patch because of a pit bull attack was apparently asked to leave a KFC restaurant because her appearance upset other customers.
After social media users opened fire on the restaurant, calling for a boycott, the apology from the chain came quickly too.
The company said it will donate $30,000 to assist with the girl's medical bills.
"The entire KFC family is behind Victoria," company spokesman Rick Maynard said.
'Her face is disrupting our customers'
Victoria Wilcher was mauled by three pit bulls a few months ago, causing her to need regular medical treatment. After a doctor's visit last week, grandmother Kelly Mullins took the child to a KFC in Jackson, Mississippi.
"I ordered a large sweet tea and her some mashed potatoes and gravy because she was hungry," Mullins told CNN affiliate WAPT.
"She was on a feeding tube at the time, but I figured she could just swallow (the potatoes). They just told us, they said, 'We have to ask you to leave because her face is disrupting our customers.' (Victoria) understood exactly what they said."
Victoria cried all the way home, Mullins said.
"She's got a lot of surgeries to go through and she won't even look in the mirror anymore," Mullins told WAPT. "When we go to a store, she doesn't even want to get out (of the car). She's 3 years old and she's embarrassed about what she looks like. She's embarrassed and I hate it because she shouldn't be. It ain't her fault."
    Anger online
Victoria's family recounted the incident in a Facebook page set up to raise money for her medical expenses.
"Does this face look scary to you?" the family posted on the Victoria's Victories Facebook page. "I personally will never step foot in another KFC again and will be personally writing the CEO."
    The anger spread.

"As soon as we were notified of this report Friday, we immediately began an investigation, as this kind of hurtful and disrespectful action would not be tolerated by KFC," the company said. "Regardless of the outcome of our investigation, we have apologized to Victoria's family and are committed to assisting them."

    A horrible attack
Authorities said Victoria was attacked in April while visiting her grandfather, from whom Kelly Mullins is divorced.
One of the dogs ripped open the front door and two other dogs dragged her into the backyard, WAPT reported.
The dogs bit the girl all over, but especially on the face.
She has severe facial scars and lost sight in her right eye and the ability to move the right side of her face, Mullins told WAPT. She wears an eye patch with a cartoon character on it.
The three dogs that attacked Victoria were killed. The grandfather, Donald Mullins, and his girlfriend were arrested on child endangerment charges, WAPT reported.
Meanwhile, the Facebook page got lots of attention, with almost 49,000 "likes" by early Monday morning.

  • What the #### is wrong with people owning killer dogs like pit bulls. I mean, look at that sweet little 3 year old girl! To those 3 pit bulls, she was a dangerous threat that needed to be attacked! How useless can a dog get? Why not make it legal to keep a pet wolf, lion, or bear while we're at it? Stupid trailer trash. As if there's anything in his trailer worth stealing anyhow! But he needs 3 killer "watch dogs" to protect it.

What is wrong with some people.

  • I should also point out that there is NO evidence that even one KFC employee did anything bad.

That is to say, this woman needed money for the girl's medical bills and she might have cooked up this whole story. She might have blackmailed KFC's reputation in order to get money (which she did! KFC is trying to salvage their smeared reputation by settling out-of-court for $30,000).

I mean, usually the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. If the grandfather is 1st class trailer trash, what does that say about his ex-wife? She obviously lived with him for years, was attracted to him, etc.

Let's just say it has me wondering.

In a world like this, with so many lawyers, unscrupulous persons, etc. it might be wise to have cameras filming at the ordering counter at restaurants, just like we have at banks.

I didn't even think of that aspect, and I'm suspicious of everything.  You may very well be right.

I was kind of thinking the same thing. And I think there is a lot of this going on right now.

This seems to be a new way to raise funds in this age of social media.

I don't use Facebook, Twitter, Google Friends or whatever it is called. And if this were my daughter or granddaughter, the last thing I would do is post it on these sites.

However, I think I would have shamed anyone who dared make such a request. And I most likely would have asked them to leave. I would do this even if I had to yell, scream, or even kick some ass. And that would be the end of it.

  • Is there any proof whatsoever that the KFC employee actually said such a rude comment?

Did anyone else in the vicinity hear what was said?

There is so more fraud and grifters are always targeting businesses.

I'm glad I'm not the only person who noticed that.

Anyway, KFC caters to the lowest common denominator:  folks too lazy to fry their own chicken and too poor to afford higher quality food.  Of course these sort of things are going to happen there.

KFC is amazingly inconsistent.  There are some locations at some times that are delicious and then, most of the time, the stuff is just too greasy and the texture to the frying in pretty bad.

Having said that, I do not like it when grifter ply their trade on them and that is probably what happened here.

  • Fast food workers are usually very busy and for the most part they aren't thinking about the customer's experience to say something like that.

OTOH I've found bank tellers and managers to be extremely rude to give preferential treatment to other customers.

Report: Viral story of disfigured girl kicked out of KFC was hoax

By Gail Sullivan June 24 at 5:00 AM

You may remember seeing pictures of Victoria Wilcher, the 3-year-old attacked by her family’s three pit bulls who was supposedly asked on May 15 to leave a KFC in Jackson, Miss., because her facial scars were too disturbing. The Internet loved the story of a disfigured little girl bullied by a multinational food conglomerate.

But the Laurel Leader-Call in Mississippi is calling it a fundraising hoax — specifically, a “Kentucky Fried Hoax.”

Several anonymous sources told the paper’s Sean Murphy that the story told by the girl’s grandmother to a local TV station about the incident doesn’t match the facts.

The family recounted the story on the Victoria’s Victories Facebook page, which docuмents the child’s recovery from an April pit bull attack that left half her face paralyzed and caused her to lose an eye. They originally said the child and her grandmother were asked to leave a KFC that turned out to have been closed for years. Victoria’s aunt Teri Rials Bates, who maintains the page, later said it happened at another location on Woodrow Wilson Drive near the Jackson hospital where Victoria went for treatment.

Security camera footage from that KFC and another near the hospital does not show children matching Victoria’s description going into either restaurant on May 15, according to sources interviewed by the Leader-Call. Nor did any orders taken that day include both sweet tea and mashed potatoes – what Mullins claimed she ordered for her granddaughter.

The source also said that many customers from the nearby hospital suffering various ailments had eaten at the KFC — and none had ever been asked to leave.

“We’ve had people come in who were shot in the face. We’ve had them with tubes and wire sticking out. We never have asked anyone to leave. There is a physically challenged person working in the Woodrow Wilson location and one of the other [KFC] managers has a child with Tourette’s Syndrome,” the source said.

People touched by Victoria’s story have reportedly sent in more than $135,000 in donations as surgeons offered their services for free.

On Monday, the family stuck to its story on Facebook.

I promise its not a hoax, I never thought any of this would blow up the way it has. The article circling the web calling this a hoax is untrue. The article it self say the investigation is not complete. It is not over until KFC releases a statement. The media outlet running this story is not connected with KFC. The family has not asked for anything, a attorney is handling all the media publicity for the family pro bono. Please do not believe untrue media. I have personally watched this family go without to provide for Victoria. They have not and would not do anything to hurt Victoria in any way.

The family’s attorney, Bill Kellum, told the Leader-Call he would not comment until the investigation is complete. The findings are expected this week. He also said the family had not decided whether to accept a $30,000 donation from KFC.

In a statement reported by a local news station on Friday, KFC said it had not been able to verify the incident and had hired a third-party consultant to look into the allegations. The fast-food restaurant had already committed $30,000 to help pay Wilcher’s medical bills; a spokesman told the AP they would pay regardless of what the investigation into the incident found.
