  • I believe they are used to represent and warn of the corruption caused by sin, though some protestants (Texe Marrs, for example) see them as "evidence" of Satanism in the Catholic Church.

  • Thanks Knight Vigilant. If you see a gargoyle used on a modern product- would you stay away from it? There is a company who uses a demon-gargoyle for its labeling. I really like the product, but don't like the idea that it has a demonesque figure on it.

  • Just for the heck of it, I looked it up in the Catholic Dictionary............

    gargoyle

(French: gargouille, throat) Projecting spout to discharge rainwater from the roof-gutters of buildings. In Gothic architecture they were grotesquely carved to represent the heads of men, demons, and beasts symbolic of various characteristics; the lion, of courage; the fox, of cunning. Some of them are famous, notably those of Notre Dame in Paris; in France it is said there are no two alike. Gargoyles are now used merely for ornamentation.

Not the kind of ornamentation I'd like decorating my place.

"But Peter and the apostles answering, said: We ought to obey God, rather than men." - Acts 5:29

The Highest Principle in the Church: "We are first of all under obedience to God, and only then under obedience to man" - Fr. Hesse

There's a good IPA (beer) that's festooned with gargoyles as well. Seems like that would get a pass too. :)
