  • I just did a search for "Raspberry Pi 3 b plus" to see if anyone is selling a used version of this board, which came out 5 months ago. And without the "plus" there should be plenty of them, since the 3b came out in 2016.

    But what were the results?

Just hundreds of people selling NEW products. There are 0 used Raspberry Pi 3's available.

Newsflash: people don't go to eBay looking to buy something new. I thought eBay was supposed to be a huge, nationwide garage sale (or auction)? If I wanted a NEW piece of tech, I'd go to Amazon, NewEgg, or Best Buy: a large, reputable business with a liberal return policy.

Is there no Internet or Google, that we need to buy from random "stores" selling on eBay?

So now we have Amazon, Walmart, Sears, eBay, everyone and their grandmother with a "marketplace" where hundreds of individual sellers list their wares, and when you do a search on the main site (Amazon, Walmart, etc.) these results are mixed in with all the other results from the anchor store.

I guess it's like a mall!  A bunch of small stores that couldn't exist on their own, living off the traffic from a huge "anchor" store in the middle.

It might be 2018's version of a mall, but in this case I have a problem with it. eBay was supposed to be used stuff, mostly listed by individuals. Now it's just another online marketplace -- in other words, nothing special.

I don't know whose fault it is, but eBay has jumped the shark.

  • Wow great observation. I've thought about that as well. Funny how when people try to 'over-monetize' (made up word?) a platform apart from it's intended purpose it sorta ruins it. People made tons of cash by becoming retail arbitragers on ebay, and now it's specialness is gone. It's all you see there.

Also there are other platforms, though not as successful, that have tried to compete. I'd used Letgo a few times. With that said, I still enjoy Craigslist. I'm always scouring the free section. I scored a free piano for my kids a few weeks ago and it's an amazingly made 1913 piece that has a beautiful sound. My wife's condition was that we needed to paint any piano we put in the home to match- she's got an eye for keeping this place looking amazing. At first I hesitated considering the age of the piano. But in my area (DFW) there are free pianos listed every day; literally. I can't imagine how many are thrown away. (Way off topic. My bad)

  • Heeeey buddy! Man, I've been here and there, by God's grace! Moving to Texas was a huge shift for me. As a fireman now I'm not by my computer almost ever. I also had this pride problem (not only past tense: "have" is actually apropos) that made it better for me to not post for a while.  ::) Hope all is well!

  • Today I had another problem with eBay --

I was selling something for $3.79 that costs $10 or more to ship by basic US Postal Service. Now normally that's not a problem because shipping is charged as well, based on the weight of the package and the service chosen. (a side issue: I have to pay a 10% fee on all money received, INCLUDING shipping costs, which EBAY KNOWS I spent on shipping, because I bought the shipping label through them! but I digress...)

But today some moron tried to buy my item and selected "Free Local Pickup" even though they are in Colorado and I'm in Texas. I guess they thought they'd get free shipping that way, like they had found some kind of loophole?  Some people are idiots. How am I supposed to make money when I spend $10 on shipping to ship an item I received $3.79 TOTAL for, not counting eBay and Paypal fees?

Would he do that for me? Somehow I doubt it! Some people just don't care about anyone but themselves.

The guy's ebay account was minutes old, with 0 feedback. Some kind of scammer. Maybe he thought I was a high volume seller and I wouldn't notice that I lost $6-$7 on this transaction? I cancelled the order, needless to say, and reported him to eBay.

  • Ebay is crap, I agree.  There's almost too many things for sale on there (probably due to companies).  I went searching for a catholic statue last week and after applying as many filters as I could (to a very specific search), I still had 5,000 results.  And most of the results were NOT what I was looking for.  People don't list their items correctly, so the filters are meaningless.  Not sure how Ebay can fix that, but it still makes their site crap.

Amazon has the opposite problem - their filters work too well.  I've searched for things and the original return was 12,000 items.  I applied just one filter and results went all the way down to 80.  What?  Makes no sense.  Unless you know exactly what you're looking for, Amazon is worthless.

Bottomline:  Eventually, people will realize that it's better to have an Ebay/Amazon for SPECIFIC things, and whoever is able to start that trend will make a heck of a lot of $.

I don't know whose fault it is, but eBay has jumped the shark.
I just made a quick look, they do have an option to click which is called: used item. This can be found in search setting before making a search, or after having made a search, can be found on the left side of the site in the box to the left.

If this be clicked, no new items should be listed and only used items. Also, putting the search by price should show you used items first, since they are cheaper. However, much unrelated stuff may be shown also when this be clicked.

Also, it is recommended to make a Google search for items that you wish to buy, since there are other seller sites than Ebay that are cheaper, such as Alibaba and Aliexpress.

Also, great ad-on tools for shopping sites that will save you a lot of money each purchase (i..e, they will automatically apply coupons, or find a cheaper item somewhere else), are the following:

    https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/cently-coupons-at-checkou/kegphgaihkjoophpabchkmpaknehfamb

    https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/honey/bmnlcjabgnpnenekpadlanbbkooimhnj

I use both. And there are more ad-ons of the same nature. If you need them for another browser, just search and you will find.

  • If you're looking for used stuff, Craigslist is where I go.  Although, I don't know if they'll have specialized computer equipment, like you're looking for.

Shouldn't you just take his money and hold the item until he comes to pick it up?  Perhaps he's intending to come to Texas soon.
