  • It looks like my friend's email is hacked.  I opened up an email from her which clearly was not from her.  I did not respond to it. Should I be concerned about my own security?

  • Yahoo gets hacked all the time (so does Hotmail).  Your e-mail isn't at risk just based on this, but you might end up getting extra spam as a result, since your e-mail address is now known.  Hackers got into your friend's account and just sent out to people in the address book.  You don't need to crack the password to send e-mail TO someone.

True. This is pretty common. Be aware, you'll not just get extra spam, but really inappropriate spam, if you know what I mean.  If you can change your address, it will save you some embarrassment and worry.

You probably already know this, but don't open any links in the email you received.

  • You should always have a certain degree of watchfulness when it comes to online security.  Regularly change your passwords, make sure they are not easy to guess, don't open strange emails, don't make your password recovery questions easy to guess, etc.

It's unfortunate we have to think this way, but it is reality.
