  • That sums it up pretty well. I was thinking much the same thing as I've had to endure the noise of endless air being wasted by my coworkers on the subject of the Idolatrous Orgy of Meaninglessness that aired on television last night.

I've found sports fans to be every bit as infantile and delusional as the members of other, less socially acceptable fanboy immersion manias. Show me a fanatical jackanapes in his favorite player's jersey and a large, foam "#1" novelty finger on his hand and I'll show you a pathetic manchild dressed as Darth Vader / Worf / Captain America, etc. I see no distinction whatsoever, apart from the fact that I don't have to suffer through protracted discussions about Jedi knights in the workplace, nor an entire section of every newspaper dedicated to what Batman was up to this week.

Thank God Cathinfo has remained largely free of such asininity. It's days like this that I miss Crossbro least.

  • When Romeo Crennel coached the Cleveland Browns, after a loss, he said:

    Quote from: Crennel
When we win, everybody's happy...... when we loose, everyone's sad..... So, that's all we can do.

People rip him for the comment, but is there much more to it than this?

Don't ask him if you are defective, ask yourself if you are too involved in sports to the point of it being a spiritual defect.  In your case, I would bet the answer is no.

I'm talking about sports fans. "Fan" is a contraction of "fanatic." Simply "liking sports" does not make one a fanatic.

But I would counsel you against holding your attachment to sports - or to any worldly thing - so dearly that you will find yourself on the defensive when someone speaks against it.

I have my own attachments to worldly things. Old habits die hard. I find myself watching the odd episode of Star Trek The Next Generation every now and then. But I'm aware of the fact that it is an attachment that I'd be better off without, and I'll voice no protest against criticisms of Star Trek fans when I know darn well those criticisms are well-founded.

I see you just started a thread about a Satanic performance at the Super Bowl halftime show. Perhaps you should reflect on why the Super Bowl was chosen as the venue for that Satanic display. You might then come to see that, like my attachment to Star Trek The Next Generation, your attachment to spectator sports is something you'd be better off without, and that it's certainly not worth "defending" in the face of very justifiable criticism.

I guess it might be better if I did not watch sports. It is a recreation for me. Sports have always been my choice of recreations since I was young and played and watched baseball. I can't just pray all day and night. I do not let it get in the way of my faith. But you may be right that I would be better on without it because I notice that they sometimes mix evil with the sports broadcasts.

  • Does anyone know if Thomas Droleskey is still a baseball fan? Or did he give up his love of the Mets?

Nah, I like sports too.  As with everything, it's about keeping things in their proper place and their proper order.  I have come to despise Pro Sports for many reasons, but that's an entirely different can of worms.

While I don't agree with John Paul II on many things, some of the things he said about (a Catholic perspective on) sports were spot on.

Sounds like you have the right moderation.  I haven't watched much sports in YEARS due to not having time (6 kids will do that to you).  But, when I did, I would DVR the game and skip through the commercials (mine had a commercial-skip function) to avoid all the offensive commercials.  In addition, I fast-forwarded all the dilly-dallying between plays.  In most cases, I was able to take in EVERY SINGLE PLAY of a football game in about 40 minutes.
