  • Don't worry -- I'm not giving members the ability to actually delete posts.

    At least not objectively.

But subjectively, yes. They can make individual posts disappear FOREVER for them, when they are logged in.

    I'll explain it very simply:

Clicking "Hide" results in ALL posts by that user being HIDDEN until you click VIEW someday, and un-hide (un-ignore) them.

Clicking "Delete" results in THAT ONE POST being hidden FOREVER, but more than hidden. You won't even see a "stub" of that post like you do with ignored posts. The post doesn't appear for you at all. That's because there's no "undo" for deleting posts.

Just another useful tool for CathInfo members. Enjoy!

Once again, Guests can't take advantage of this feature. So sign up, Guests!

  • I must be understanding this wrong, because the way I understand it, I would have to read the note first, then decide to delete it only for myself, not everyone else.  So what would be the point if I already read it.

Or does it get a count like the ignore does, so others can see that someone read the note but deleted it just because.
    Please pray for my soul.

I gather it's not so much an "I don't like it" but rather an I've already read it and don't want to have to scroll past it 50 times each time I return to this thread.

  • So far, no "delete count". Though I can't say I won't implement something like that in the future. But if I did, it would be in conjuction with a "thumbs up/thumbs down" feature -- I want the Delete feature to be for purely housekeeping purposes, not a political "vote" of sorts.

It might be a really good feature -- say, more than 15 "thumbs down" sitewide and the post gets displayed with grey text instead of black.

You know, this isn't unprecedented. If you visit Youtube, you'll note the "comments" section does something similar. When a comment gets enough "thumbs down", they figure it's probably childish/rude/vulgar/etc. so they have a link that says "This message got a lot of down votes. Click here to read the comment". That way you don't have to skim through garbage.

I don't know if we'd need such a feature here -- maybe someday in the future.

  • No, this is for subjective housekeeping.

Like Myrna said, once you delete a post you've basically already read it -- so who cares if you don't want to see it a bunch more times every time you re-visit the thread...

  • Eventually I want to expand it to Topics, but I haven't decided exactly how I'm going to implement that.

  • Maybe if possible you can have a button for each member to send a particular topic to a private archival section.

  • Good new feature, Matthew! CatholicInfo just keeps getting better and better.
Please ignore ALL of my posts. I was naive during my time posting on this forum and didn’t know any better. I retract and deeply regret any and all uncharitable or erroneous statements I ever made here.

  • I think that during the week of St. Patricks day the "ignore" function should be temporarily renamed the "Irish Shun".  :alcohol:
