" Yet in early Middle-Ages, the Doctors and Saints used to see in the wound of Jesus' side the source of all graces. St. Bonaventure invites us 'to enter this wound and to dwell in the quiet of this Heart.' "
" The two benedictine virgins, St. Gertrude and St. Mechtilde, in the thirteenth century, had a clear vision of the grandeur of the devotion to the Sacred Heart. St. John the evangelist, appearing to the former, announced to her that 'the meaning of the blessed beating of the heart of Jesus which he had heard while his head rested on His breast, was reserved for the latter times when the world grown old and cold in divine love, would require to have its fervour renewed by means of this mystery of burning love."
" But in order to make this worship public and recognized, Providence first raised up St. John Eudes, who in 1670 composed an Office and a Mass of the Sacred Heart for the so-called Congregation of the Eudists. Providence then chose one of the spiritual daughters of St. Francis of Sales, St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, to whom Jesus showed His Heart at Paray-le-Monial, on June 16th, 1675, Sunday after Corpus Christi, and asked her to institute a feast of the Sacred Heart on the Friday following the Octave of Corpus Christi. Lastly, God employed for the propagation of this devotion, Blessed Claude de la Colombiere."....
" In 1765, Clement XIII gave his approbation to the feast and the Office of the Sacred Heart, and in 1856, Pius IX, extended it to the universal Church. In 1929 Pius XI composed a new Mass and Office for this feast and gave it a privileged Octave of the third Order."...
Collect: "O God, who in the Heart of Thy Son, wounded by our transgressions, dost mercifully vouchasfe to bestow upon us the infinite wealth of Thy love; grant, we beseech Thee, that revering it with meet devotion, we may make a worthy reparation for our sins. Through the same Thy Son our Lord"
Offertory: "My heart hath expected reproach and misery: and I looked for one that would grieve together with me, but there was none; and for one that would comfort me, and I found none.
Burnt-offering and sin-offerng thou didst not require: then said I: behold I come. In the head of the book it is written of me, that I should do Thy will: O my God, I have desired it, and Thy law in the midst of my heart: alleluia.
Communion: John vii. 37. If any man thirst, let him come to Me and drink, alleluia, alleluia."
Postcommunion: "May Thy holy mysteries, O Lord Jesus, produce in us a divine fervour, whereby, having tasted the sweetness of Thy most dear Heart, we may learn to despise earthly things and love those of heaven."
The Life of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque (pg 163-, 167-, 175-)
First Revelation December 27th, 1673 (Feast of St. John the Evangelist): "My Divine Heart is so passionately in love with men that it can no longer contain within itself the flames of it's ardent charity. It must pour them out by thy means, and manifest itself to them to enrich them with its precious treasures, which contain all the graces of which they have need to be saved from perdition.' He added: 'I have chosen thee as an abyss of unworthiness and ignorance to accomplish so great a design, so that all may be done by Me.'" Thus, according to the conditions of this first revelation, the new devotion was going to be the grand effort of the Heart of Jesus, "passionately in love with men," and wishing at any cost to draw them from the abyss of perdition." Until then ordinary means had sufficed. But in the sad sate in which the world was, Jesus could no longer 'contain the flames of this burning charity in His Heart.' which wished to save all men."
Second Revelation 1674: "In recounting the first apparition, Margaret Mary had not described the adorable person of the Lord, because, probably, it had not the same glorious character as this one...Till that hour Jesus was the Friend, the Father, making a tender effort to save His children. Now He is the outraged Spouse, the unacknowledged King about to demand reparation. Whilst Margaret, trembling with emotion, was contemplating Him, "He unfolded to me," she says, "the inexplicable wonders of His pure love, and to what an excess He had carried it for the love of men, from whom He had received only ingratitude. 'This is,' He said, 'much more painful to Me than all I suffered in My Passion. If men rendered Me some return of love, I should esteem little all I have done for them, and should wish, if such could be, to suffer it ove again; but they meet My eager love with coldness and rebuffs. Do you, at least,' said He in conclusion, 'console and rejoice Me, by supplying as much as you can for their ingratitude.' "
After having shown in the first revelation the true principle of the new devotion, namely, a love whose flames He could no longer confine in His Heart, Jesus now revealed its character. This devotion would be an amende honorable and an expiation for all the crimes of the world, a consolation for His forsaken Heart...
Then the Lord asked two things of her: the first, to communicate every first Friday of each month to make Him the amende honorable; the second, to rise between eleven o'clock and midnight on the night between Thursday and Friday of every week, and to prostrate for an hour with with her face to the ground, in expiation of the sins of men, and to console His Heart for that general desertion, to which the weakness of the apostles in the Garden of Olives had been only a slight prelude."
Third and Last Revelation June 16th, 1675: "Behold," said He to her, "this Heart which has so loved men that it has spared nothing, even to exhausting and consuming itself, in order to testify its love. In return, I receive from the greater part only ingratitude, by their irreverence and sacrilege, and by the coldness and contempt they have for Me in this sacrament of love. And what is most painful to Me," added the Saviour, in a tone that went to the Sister's heart, "is that they are hearts consecrated to Me." Then He commanded her to have established in the Church a particular feast to honor His Sacred Heart. "It is for this reason I ask thee that the first Friday after the octave of the Blessed Sacrament be appropriate to a special feast, to honor My Heart by communicating on that day, and making reparation for the indignity that it has received. And I promise that My Heart shall dilate to pour out abundantly the influences of its love on all that will render it this honor or procure its being
rendered."
Pope Leo XIII: Prayer of Consecration of the Sacred Heart of Jesus to the WorldMost sweet Jesus, Redeemer of the human race,
look down upon us, humbly prostrate before Your altar.
We are Yours and Yours we wish to be;
but to be more surely united with You, behold each one of us
freely consecrates himself today to Your most Sacred Heart.
Many, indeed, have never known You;
many too, despising Your precepts, have rejected You.
Have mercy on them all, most merciful Jesus,
and draw them to Your Sacred Heart.
Be You King, O Lord,
not only of the faithful who have never forsaken You,
but also of the prodigal children who have abandoned You;
grant that they may quickly return to Your Father's house,
lest they die of wretchedness and hunger.
Be You King of those who are deceived by erroneous opinions,
or whom discord keeps aloof,
and call them back to the harbour of truth and unity of faith,
so that soon there may be but one flock and one shepherd.
Be You King also of all those who sit
in the ancient superstition of the Gentiles,
and refuse not to deliver them out of darkness
into the light and kingdom of God.
Grant, O Lord, to Your Church,
assurance of freedom and immunity from harm;
give peace and order to all nations,
and make the Earth resound from pole to pole with one cry:
Praise to the divine Heart that wrought our salvation;
to it be glory and honour forever. Amen.
