Please quit posting that, AB. Let's not start another MM fight.
Note to SSS:
Due to cataracts, I failed to see the word "Please..." at the very start of your post. I fail to see far too much, as well, unfortunately, even when I am looking at it directly these days. Thus, I first took your comment to be an imperative and, being Irish, responded in the time-honored manner of immediately smashing a beer bottle on the nearest hard object and coming after you with the sharp, pointy end.
However, you were being polite and I was polemical. Mea culpa.
Note to PFT: I wish I could recall which talk by our mutual hero, Canon Hesse, contains his highly negative comments about MM's actual knowledge of Rome, but the late theologian/canonist par excellence DOES state that on one of them if you'd care to wade through them all....
http://en.gloria.tv/?search=Fr.+Gregory+HesseAs for MM himself, I read several of his works back in the 90s and admit he had a gift for a certain form of fluency. I always thought poorly of his appearances on that weirdo overnight "ghost" host show and I think some of his remarks on Bell only reinforced my impression of the ex-priest as a fabulist, so I stopped reading his books. It wasn't until the new millenium that I learned of the "other" side of the story about him - long before ever discrovering the "AQ File" on him. That, of course, only corroborated other information I learned from direct witnesses of one of MM's escapades that ruined a Catholic family from the area in which I lived years ago.
Thus, SSS and PFT, my serious reservations about any use of MM as a "source" for much of anything. If that makes matters plainer, I am pleased.
